Where is Dillon Scott?

Spring Valley, Illinois -
On Monday, Feb. 29, Bureau County Sheriff James Reed stated at about 2:52 a.m. Feb. 28, the Bureau County Sheriff’s Department responded to a single vehicle accident on Route 29 nearly a mile west of County Road 3065 East in Hall Township.

Deputies located a green 1994 Cadillac that had collided with a guardrail, and no one was located at the scene. Moments before the accident, Spring Valley Police Department had reported a green Cadillac and a dark colored Dodge pickup had left Spring Valley westbound on Route 29 driving recklessly at a high rate of speed. It was later determined a sole male occupant, Dillon H. Scott, 20, of Princeton had fled the scene of the accident. There was no evidence to believe Scott had been seriously injured.

A witness stated a male subject fitting Scott’s description had come to their home asking for assistance and fled when the owner advised they would contact the police. A search of the area for Scott was conducted with the assistance of the Bureau County Sheriff’s Mounted Search and Rescue and Peru Police K9. A unified command post was set up and aid was given by Echo Bluff Girl Scout Camp. The search concluded with no evidence to suggest that Scott was still in the immediate area.

Adding to the mystery, Karshner said that Scott's wife, Brienna, has told the family "Dillon is OK," but has yet to explain what she meant to worried family members.

[h=1]Police: Missing man is on parole, knows he's in trouble[/h]The search for a missing Princeton man, while still open, has yielded no additional clues, according to Bureau County sheriff Jim Reed.

Dillon H. Scott, 20, of Princeton was last seen shortly after fleeing from the scene of an accident at approximately 3 a.m. on Sunday, Feb. 27.

“At this point, the investigation is active,” Reed said, “the thing to remember, is that (he) left the scene voluntarily. The fact is, he was involved with two other agencies in a chase just prior to the accident. He left the scene, he’s on parole and he knows he’s in trouble. We don’t believe at this time that there’s anything suspicious.”

Dillon Scott — a Bureau County man with Streator family connections — has been missing 18 months since he disappeared in the early morning hours following a minor traffic accident in rural Spring Valley on Feb. 28, 2016.
Scott's family is convinced he is dead, either by exposure to the elements from being lost in the woods or a victim of foul play by someone he knew.

Bureau County authorities think otherwise.

The last time Sheriff Jim Reed spoke to The Times about Scott in 2016, he suggested the young man may be hiding from a possible jail sentence for breaking parole and facing traffic infractions.

Bureau County Sheriff Jim Reed has not returned phone messages for comment.

The Times filed a Freedom of Information Act request for the files in the Scott case in an attempt to gain a better understanding of the case.

This week, it was denied by Bureau County Sheriff's Office, citing that disclosing any official information would "obstruct an ongoing criminal investigation and interfere with pending or actually and reasonably contemplated law enforcement proceedings."

Scott's mother, Becky Tunget, of Streator, disagrees.

"It's not an ongoing investigation," Tunget said. "The (Bureau County) investigators won't return my phone call. They don't care about my family or finding my kid."

Circumstances of Disappearance Was involved in a car accident on Route 29, last seen about 30 minutes after the accident.

Scott was last seen in rural Bureau County, Illinois on February 28, 2016. His green 1994 Cadillac struck a guardrail on Route 29 near Echo Bluff Park, just west of Spring Valley, at 3:00 a.m. At the accident site, the vehicle sustained minor damage to the front end. There was no bloor and the airbag had not been deployed, suggesting the driver was not seriously injured.

His best friend stated he witnessed the accident. He said he and Scott had been driving their cars around, chasing each other and speeding, when Scott lost control and hit the guardrail. When his friend arrived at the accident scene, Scott was gone, and his friend never saw him again.

About thirty minutes after the accident, a man was scene walking up to a house in the Echo Bluff area, about one-eighth to one-quarter of a mile from the site of the crash. The homeowners stated the man looked like Scott but was shorter than Scott would have been, and that he walked up the driveway to their house but then turned and left after a dog began barking. It's possible the person wanted to use a phone but was scared off by the dog.

Scott's only jacket was found lying in a field across the road from the accident site. With it was an envelope containing the title to Scott's trailer home. He normally kept the title in his wallet, which disappeared with him; it's not clear whether the wallet has ever been found.

At the time of his disappearance, Scott was in the process of a divorce. He spent the day before he disappeared with his best friend, and also visited his family and talked to his father about the divorce. He asked his father for advice and said he thought his best friend was having an affair with his wife.

Scott does have a minor criminal record, for stealing scrap metal when he was 18 years old. He was on probation for that offense. Scott did not realize this, but three days before he went missing a warrant was issued for his arrest for violating probation.

His family does not believe he would have run away because of this warrant, even if he had known about its existence. They stated he had put his life back together after getting into trouble, and had been doing well. He never picked up his monthly Social Security checks after his disappearance; these checks were his only source of income.

Although police stated there's no evidence of foul play in Scott's disappearance, his family thinks he may not have been driving the car when it crashed, and they believe he may have been murdered. His case remains unsolved.
