More charges have been filed in San Jose against a man accused of molesting at least two boys.
KCBS reporter Jim Taylor says 63 year old Dean Arthur Schwartzmiller was arrested last month and now faces seven felony counts in San Jose.

During a search of his home in the South Bay, San Jose police spokesman Nick Muyo said officers discovered a log Schwartzmiller kept of his purported conquests.

“There were notations from this gentleman about some of the things he’s done," he said. "Based on information and evidence that investigators recovered during the course of his arrest and a search of his residence, it leads them to believe there are probably more victims out there."

There could be hundreds of other victims dating back to the 1970s, if the log entries are to be believed.

Police believe Schwartzmiller may have molested boys in several states, including California, Washington, Oregon and Idaho.

A convicted child molester jailed here may have committed sex crimes against many thousands of victims in at least five U.S. states as well as Brazil and Mexico, police said Thursday after finding computers, binders and hand-written records of names and codes indicating sex acts involved.



Dean Arthur Schwartzmiller, 63, was being held without bail on one count of aggravated sexual assault on a child under 14 and six counts of lewd and lascivious conduct on a child under 14, with each count alleging multiple victims, San Jose Police Lt. Scott Cornfield said.



Schwartzmiller is "one of the most active child molesters we've ever seen," said Cornfield.

San Jose resident is in jail in lieu of $2 million bail after the parents of a 12-year-old boy came to police with evidence that the man had sexually molested the child.

San Jose police said Dean Arthur Schwartzmiller, 63, was arrested in Washington on a Santa Clara County warrant and is awaiting extradition.

Schwartzmiller has had access to many minors over the years that he lived in several states, including New York, Idaho and Oregon, and where he has gone by various aliases, according to police.

Twelve years ago, Dean Schwartzmiller stood in a Portland, Ore. courtroom and cried as he apologized to a 15-year-old boy he'd molested, the predator's third conviction. He wasn't so sorry, though, that he wouldn't do it again and again -- across the West and possibly in San Jose, police believe.

Investigators are trying to piece together a history of the 63-year-old Schwartzmiller, who has been to prison on child molestation charges in Idaho, Oregon and possibly other states, and they believe the notebooks will be invaluable if they can be deciphered.

``In most cases, we don't have last names,'' Cornfield said. ``They're from different states, according to the records here. They also list codes that we have yet to completely identify, but we believe those codes indicate certain sex acts that the suspect engaged in with these children.''

Many of the possible victims were identified with fake names such as ``Cowboy Boy'' and ``Boy U of I.''

San Jose police got onto the most recent case last month, after the parents of a possible victim came to police with a CD-ROM containing child *advertiser censored* that the 12-year-old had allegedly gotten from Schwartzmiller. In the search of his home, they also confiscated a 6-foot-tall computer server that they sent out for analysis at the Regional Computer Forensics Laboratory in Menlo Park. They speculated that they will find child *advertiser censored* on the machine, but so far they have found no evidence that Schwartzmiller was making or selling illegal *advertiser censored*.

At a news conference Thursday, investigators asked the public to look carefully at Schwartzmiller's picture, peruse his known aliases and think about whether they know him. Among his many aliases are Dean Miller and Dean Harmon.
They said it's imperative to come forward because the victims need help, even if the trauma occurred decades ago. Such victims often become molesters themselves, they said, but help is available.

Meanwhile, neighbors of the two convicted molesters, who lived in the Santa Teresa neighborhood of South San Jose, said Schwartzmiller was always outside playing with children on the bikes he kept in the garage.

He allegedly enticed neighborhood children with video games and toys and even took pictures of them.

``He sat in the front yard all the time hanging out with kids,'' said Lisa Thornburg, a software company worker who lives on Vineyard Drive with her two sons, ages 6 and 9.

Thornburg said she never spoke to Schwartzmiller, who lived two doors down from her house, but noticed that he always had toys in his yard -- anything that ``would make kids interested in playing over there.'' About twice a week, she said, a man would drop off two young boys at Schwartzmiller's residence.

Schwartzmiller and Everts met in 1993 at a jail in Portland, Ore. before they were both transferred to a state prison, where they met again.

Schwartzmiller was paroled on sodomy charges three years later and the two planned to move to California. Schwartzmiller was to get settled and await Everts' release.

Police reports reveal that Everts claimed to be Schwartzmiller's son. Both men had the same preference: boys between the ages of 11 and 13, according to the reports.

The men reportedly took their victims to Santa Cruz where they would hike and go to a lake.

Everts claimed that Schwartzmiller's logs were a way of "keeping score." The detailed codes reportedly indicated the victim's genitalia size, if the victims had pubic hair and if they ejaculated, according to police reports.

Relatives of a man suspected in thousands of cases of child sexual abuse described him Friday as a "black sheep" whose only ties with the family dissolved years ago when his grandmother died.

Dean Schwartzmiller, 63, was arrested May 23 in Washington state on a California fugitive warrant. An anonymous tipster provided information that led to his arrest, Snohomish County Sheriff's spokesman Rich Niebusch said Friday.

Jack Schwartzmiller of Butte, Mont., said his cousin Dean lost contact with most of his relatives years ago. Dean Schwartzmiller has three brothers and a sister living in western Washington, but they could not be reached for comment.

"They knew he was in trouble all the time and they really had disassociated themselves of him," Jack Schwartzmiller said, calling his cousin "just a black sheep in the family."

Schwartzmiller's family knew he had legal troubles, but are likely "pretty surprised at the part that's coming out now," said his aunt, Shirlea Schwartzmiller of Edmonds.

I don't know who Lisa Bloom was sitting in for today but she had a clip of LE saying there were 36,720 names entered into his countless spiral bound notebooks.

They had the one neighbor lady who told her kids to stay away from that man after he bought ice cream for them.

Lisa Bloom says, "I like that mom. I like that mom."

Marc Klass (also on the show) says, "That's right kids, if any man tries to coerce you with toys, candy, skateboards or even an amusement park in their front yard, stay away from them."

It was ``keeping score,'' Everts said of his friend's logs. Schwartzmiller thought he was dying, and his ``manuscript was his parting story,'' police say Everts told them.

While staggering in magnitude, keeping books -- or souvenirs of exploits -- fits the profile of many child molesters, said Robert Dillon, a San Jose police detective with the Child Exploitation Detail and the Internet Crimes Against Children Task Force.

``Child sexual predators tend to keep material, writings, anything that can remind them of the act themselves or the victim,'' Dillon said. ``They tend to hang on to things, whether you want to call it a trophy or a memento of the occasion.''

The men's downfall was a hit-and-run collision, after which Schwartzmiller apparently left the scene. On May 18, tips led officers to the home of the men. Schwartzmiller was away; Everts first gave a phony name but finally fessed up -- and the cops soon learned he was wanted in Oregon.

Everts was arrested, and Schwartzmiller feared the cops were bearing down on him. He called one of the boys he is now accused of molesting, instructing him to go to the home he and Everts shared to remove and destroy paperwork and CD computer files. He and his sister did, and she found a paper saying Schwartzmiller was wanted by the FBI.

Alarmed, the family turned it over to the police.

The boy who grew up in the small town of Snohomish, graduated in 1959 from Snohomish High. The annual that year shows a popular kid, active in football, basketball, and part of several different school clubs. And in all the many photos, he always has a smile on his face.

That's more in line with the Schwartzmiller Lynda Pichler of Everett knew. "He was always a nice guy to us," she said.

When Schwartzmiller was on the run from California authorities, he ran to Washington where he grew up, and stayed with Pichler, a family friend.

Pichler knew he'd served time for child molestation in Oregon, but thought it was in his past.

"I knew he had a background, I had no idea he was still involved," she said.

But seven years ago, Snohomish County prosecutors charged Schwartzmiller with molesting Pichler's two nephews who were just 13 and 9 at the time. A jury at that time acquitted Schwartzmiller.

Thursday, California investigators revealed the scope of the new case against Schwartzmiller, including seven notebooks filled with thousands of names of children Schwartzmiller allegedly molested.

Pichler's daughter discovered one of those notebooks in Everett.

Schwartzmiller's criminal record began 35 years ago, but he never registered as a sex offender and spent just 12 years in prison. In his time on the outside, police suspect he molested children as many as 36,000 times in several states, Mexico and Brazil.

Wily, charismatic and "smarter than heck," is how James Kevan, one of his defense lawyers in the mid-1970s, described Schwartzmiller on Friday. "He could write up legal documents better than most lawyers."
