Lancaster man vanishes while with friends in Hermosa Beach

Pier Plaza, Hermosa Beach, California -
A Lancaster man has been missing since he walked away from his friends in Hermosa Beach, police said.

Michael David Vanzandt, 36, had been waiting in line at American Junkie restaurant on Pier Plaza at 10:15 p.m. Saturday, police said. His friends were unable to reach him on his cellphone shortly after he was last seen. There were no signs of foul play.

Vanzandt is described as white, 6 feet tall and 190 pounds with blond hair and blue eyes.

He has at least three tattoos — a tiger in the jungle on his left biceps and shoulder, a small Buddha on his back, and “KEATON” in descending letters on his left calf.

Michael David Vanzandt and his friends were waiting to get into American Junkie around 10:15 p.m. when he walked to the liquor store next door and walked out. That's the last time anyone saw the father of three.

Vanzandt and his friends had watched the UFC fight earlier in the night and rented a hotel room to avoid having to drive home to Lancaster, but Vanzandt never made it back to the room.

Vanzandt and his wife of 14 years are going through a divorce, but she says he would never leave their children behind.

Vanzandt, who works at the Edwards Air Force Base, is a swimmer and a scuba diver, so his brother wonders if he left his friends to go down to the beach. "He's somebody that does like to take swims at night, you know, after he's been drinking," Tyler Vanzandt said. "I've been out with him numerous times and certainly, that's a concern."

His car was found at the Quality Inn right where he had parked it, his belongings undisturbed.

He was waiting in line with friends at the American Junkie restaurant, located at 68 Pier Avenue, at about 10:15 p.m., then walked to Roberts Liquor next door. After that, Vanzandt's friends lost sight of him.

This is right in my neck of the woods and is pretty big news here as we don't get a lot of missing people in the beach cities. The liquor store he went to is right on the corner by the "main street" so maybe someone or some people he pissed off drug him in the van....but even that sounds crazy because at that time of night there's still a ton of people walking around. The police have a big presence right along that area too. Or perhaps he fell off the Hermosa Pier in to the water, hopefully unintentional. This is a strange one and am hoping he's found soon.

Michael David Vanzandt was last seen by his friends around 10:15 p.m. leaving the line to American Junkie and walking toward Roberts Liquor, according to a news release from the Hermosa Beach Police Department.

On Monday, Vanzandt failed to show up for his job at Edwards Air Force Base.

Friends and family said Vanzandt's belongings and his car were still untouched Tuesday at the Quality Inn where he was staying.

The Air Force veteran and father of three has not been seen or heard from since.

Thanks! I'm fearing something water related. :(

Yep ...:(: "Vanzandt, who works at the Edwards Air Force Base, is a swimmer and a scuba diver, so his brother wonders if he left his friends to go down to the beach.

Ten p.m. seems early to be so inebriated that you drown but...

Since the reports say he was last seen heading to the liquor store, it sounds like he didn't make it there.

An Air Force veteran and father of three originally from Jackson went missing in Hermosa Beach, Calif. Saturday, March 5.

Michael VanZandt, a Northwest High School alumnus, was out with friends watching UFC 196 and had rented a hotel room. VanZandt was in line with friends at a pub when he started walking toward a nearby liquor store around 10:15 p.m., the Hermosa Beach Police Department reports.

Friends told officers they lost contact with VanZandt's cellphone soon after he went missing, the Los Angeles Times reports.

Tyler Vanzandt said security cameras showed his brother purchase something from the store, then wander around the area for a bit, before meeting up with the group of unidentified people and walking off into the neighborhoods surrounding the pier area

This would seem to lead away from the idea that he went for a swim in the ocean, and it reinforces what I last posted where someone said he was last seen walking the plaza away from the pier area. Who is this group of people he goes with, and why would he abandon his friends at the restaurant? What can be done to locate this group of people he is seen with on the security camera?

Thanks for posting this, slowpoke. I must say for the first couple of days after Michael's disappearance, I was convinced that there must have been some sort of water-related accident, but for a couple of days now, my "hinky meter" has been going off. I still believe that the most likely scenario in this case is an accidental drowning, but it would not surprise me at all if there is foul play involved, and I'm sure LE is looking at the possibility also. He appears to be very much loved, and I hope that he is found very soon.

This is in my neck of the woods. I do have to say, I suspect foul play. I pray that they find the people he was last seen with. I think they hold the key. I don't think he "went for a swim". The ocean is so cold, especially this time of the year. Where are you Michael?

Not to mention he would have turned up by now....Hate to say it because this is also my neck of the woods, but foul play is on my radar. Sleepy little beach town no more

I agree totally. I think he must have known the "new" group that the cameras caught. I wouldnt think most people would be laughing and hugging people if they had no idea who they were. Even think friend of a friend. I really wish they would release these videos.
