POLICE hold serious concerns for a nurse who was abducted from her remote home in South Australia’s Far North, with her disappearance declared a major crime.

A huge search is underway for Gayle Woodford, 56, around Fregon and Marla, in the restricted Anangu Pitjantjatjara Yankunytjatjara Lands.

Police believe she was taken from her home in an ambulance used by the health service where she worked.

The STAR group involved in the search is South Australia's version of the armed police/SWAT.

I wonder if the police already have a suspect in mind? The STAR group involved in the search is South Australia's version of the armed police/SWAT.

“The driver, a 36-year-old man of Fregon, has been arrested and charged with the theft of the vehicle and at this stage there is nothing to suggest any criminal conduct by the passengers of the vehicle.”
Supt Bray said the arrested man had provided detectives with “a version of events that we are not happy with”.
He remains in custody at Coober Pedy Police Station where he will stay until he faces court early next week.
“It’s very important that anyone who saw an Aboriginal man driving the Fregon ambulance or saw the occupant to contact police,’’ Supt Bray said

Wow. I do wonder where she is.
Is it possible he just found the ambulance somewhere? I'm sure LE knows more than we know still a little weird.

"Mrs Woodford’s last medical consultation was at 8.47pm on Wednesday at Fregon and she returned home where she went to bed with her husband.
Mr Woodford noticed his wife was gone in the morning but was not concerned as she was often called out at short notice.

But Mrs Woodford was reported missing about 10.35am on Thursday after she failed to arrive for work at the Fregon medical clinic and the ambulance was noticed missing.
Supt Bray said police believed Mrs Woodford was taken from outside her home."

“Witnesses identified the security gate (at her house) being opened around midnight. We do know from the GPS tracker in the ambulance, the movements of the ambulance, where it went and when it went.”
He said the ambulance left Fregon shortly after midnight, then travelled through Mimili, where it remained for about three hours.

Police have located a body believed to be that of missing woman Gayle Woodford, about 1.5 kilometres east of Fregon today during a search.
Forensic Response investigators will leave Adelaide tomorrow morning to travel to the area and examine the scene, which is under police guard

“Around 2 o’clock people searching on foot along GPS lines located what they believed to be a shallow grave,” he said.

“Some further investigation located another crime scene about 500m away, I can’t disclose what happened at those scenes but certainly there are two distinct areas that we are looking at.”
The first crime scene was about 70m from the roadside, while Ms Woodford’s body was found in a shallow grave 500m further into the scrub.

Why the hell would a nurse be expected to work alone....in an area with NO MOBILE COVERAGE AND NO POLICE STATION??

Joanne Norton who established the petition on change.org said Remote Area Nurses were "extremely vulnerable".

"Most of us ... have horrendous stories about being either sexually abused, physically abused, verbally abused. So it is pretty bad and the trend it seems to be getting worse," Ms Norton said.

She said two nurses had been sexually assaulted since Christmas.

Ms Norton said Remote Area Nurses worked in Indigenous communities and isolated country towns.

She said the areas the nurses covered often had minimum or no police presence and poor mobile phone coverage.

I mean, wow. This should hopefully be a wake up call to whoever it is that employs nurses in this area. Sounds like a disaster was inevitable. The employers have a lot to answer for here, they did/do not take care of their employees health and safety at all.

I agree! With the drug & alcohol epidemic EVERYWHERE, a lone nurse with a bag full 'goodies' would definitely be a prime target walking into a home.....whose behind that door? OMG it's a frightening prospect. Even our bus drivers are in danger from attacks not to mention our wonderful Ambos. God forbid this must stop immediately!

Such a tragic and preventable murder.
I do wonder how he got the nurse out of her house. It's bizarre.

It's probably not okay to link it here, but there is a petition calling for single RAN (remote area nurse) positions to be abolished and to make all jobs require two responders.

It's a necessary change but it should already have been that way. There have been two sexual assaults on nurses in the area since Christmas 2015 and now this.

The service station attendant said the other two people, a man & a woman, who were later released were hitchhikers whose care broke down. The 'alleged' murder gave them a lift into town.

Also the food and fuel was paid with cash....I wonder the the money was Gayle's.

Nearly 90,000 people have signed a petition demanding stronger security measures for remote health workers following the violent murder of remote nurse Gayle Woodford.

Joanne Norton, a nurse from Young in NSW, launched the petition last weekend urging for stronger safeguards for rural health workers, including making it mandatory to work in pairs when attending after-hour call outs and emergencies.

She also called on federal health minister Sussan Ley to abolish single nurse posts across the country.

Remote nurses regularly faced violent and dangerous situations when on call, she said.

'Many many nurses have been physically assaulted and since December last year, we have had two sexual assaults in one of the state and territories of this country which is absolutely abhorrent,' she told the Seven Network.

Remote healthcare association CRANAplus executive officer Christopher Cliffe told AAP that people in the industry were very angry and upset over Ms Woodford's disappearance and death.

A man accused of murdering outback nurse Gayle Woodford has lost a bid to have his name suppressed at his first court appearance.

Duley Davey appeared in the Port Augusta Magistrates Court on Tuesday charged over the death of Ms Woodford, who went missing from her Fregon home where she worked in a community health clinic.

Davey, 34, was remanded in custody to appear in the same court on June 20 with Magistrate Clive Kitchin rejecting a defence application to conceal Davey's identity.
