Found Deceased LA - Duell Moreland, 26, Monterey, 29 March 2016 *Arrest*

This is from 2014, but I'm wondering if he may have some kind of upcoming court date/trial. There is the potential here for some pretty hefty prison time.

Moreland was booked into jail for hunting deer during illegal hours, failing to comply with deer-tagging requirements, second offense of illegal possession of marijuana, resisting an officer, possession of marijuana while in possession of a firearm, hunting deer using illegal methods and using archery equipment with illegal sights. Mason was booked into jail for being a convicted felon in possession of a firearm, hunting deer using illegal methods and failing to comply with deer-tagging requirements.

(...)

Possessing a firearm while in possession of marijuana carries up to a $10,000 fine and five to 10 years in jail. Possessing a firearm by a convicted felon brings a $1,000 to $5,000 fine and 10 to 20 years in jail. Second offense possession of marijuana carries a $250 to $2,000 fine and up to five years in jail. Resisting an officer carries up to a $500 fine and up to six months in jail. Hunting deer during illegal hours brings a $900 to $950 fine and up to 120 days in jail. Failing to comply with deer-tagging requirements and using illegal sights each carries a $100 to $350 fine and up to 60 days in jail. Hunting deer using illegal methods brings a $250 to $500 fine and up to 90 days in jail.

[T]he family said they got a tip that Moreland's body could be off of Peale Cross Road, near some farm land and off of a bayou... The family decided to take matters into their own hands by getting a boat and going to the site.

That's were Moreland's grandfather said he discovered the body of his grandson, burned and dismembered.

The family tells us they believe one person is in custody for Moreland's death.

LE is not yet confirming any details.

(...) Steve Murrell said the family’s concerns about CPSO’s investigation were limited to the efforts to locate him prior to the discovery of what they believe to be Moreland’s body.

(...) We are appreciative of what they’re trying to do. But we’re disappointed that they didn’t move faster.”

Kim Murrell said she believes a more thorough search would have resulted in finding the remains sooner.

“I would have had an actual body to bury, instead of what I have now,” she said.

Concordia Parish Sheriff’s Office (CPSO) Chief Deputy David Hedrick said Tuesday that a 34-year-old Monterey man is considered a person of interest in the disappearance of Duell Moreland.

Hedick identified the person as Hartwell Layne Tiffee, 34,Highway 907. He was charged Saturday with possession of an illegal weapon, a 12-guage sawed-off shotgun...

CPSO said in a press release Monday afternoon that it has unofficially changed the missing person investigation of Moreland to a homicide investigation pending a positive forensic identification of the remains.

Man accused of second-degree murder in death of Monterey man not indicted

A Monterey man accused of second-degree murder may soon be released from jail after a Concordia Parish Grand Jury did not indict him.

Hartwell Layne Tiffee, 34, 679 Louisiana 907, was arrested in June for second-degree murder in the death of 26-year-old Duell Moreland of Monterey. Thursday, the grand jury did not indict Tiffee because of insufficient evidence.

Defense Attorney Andy Magoun said the decision does not address guilt or innocence on this charge.

“A homicide case in Louisiana never expires, so as far as I am concerned, this remains an open investigation,” Magoun said. “Any new evidence can bring momentum to move forward in prosecuting this case. It could be 10 years down the road — that’s the nature of a homicide case.”

CPSO Chief Deputy David Hedrick said his department would continue an active investigation into the death of Moreland.

“Although the grand jury chose not to file a true bill, this case is not being put to rest,” Hedrick said. “Our investigators will continue to pursue this case to the best of our ability until justice is served.”

“Our sympathies go out to Mr. Moreland’s friends and family who still suffer from their loss and who seek justice for their loved one,” Hedrick said.

Who killed Duell Moreland? - March 27th

http://www.myarklamiss.com/news/local-news/who-killed-duell-moreland/681529592

The spot where Duell was found was deep in the woods off of Peale Cross Road next to a bayou.

"You don't know how to get back there to where Duell was at unless you've lived here your whole life you don't just randomly walk up on that spot," Moreland's mom says as she speculates who killed her son.

So who committed the crime?

The family points fingers to their distant cousin, 35 year old Hart Tiffee, saying the remains were found near his hunting camp.

this should be a reminder to many new folks who come to WS that we must be patient and never assume LE has given up.
