John Franklin knew something was wrong when he spotted scavenger birds diving into the woods near his neighborhood bus stop on Old Winter Garden Road. When he approached, he found a naked woman's body in the brush...

The Orange County Sheriff's Office identified the victim as 42-year-old Ethel Shannon McCarson...

The woman was decapitated, cut in half and her arms and legs were cut off, witnesses said.

McCarson was last seen alive March 31 in her home in Polk County, Ga., according to the Sheriff's Office. It's unknown how, or when she ended up in Central Florida. Deputies said McCarson was known to travel around the Florida panhandle area.

Deputies said they're working with police in Eustis about a similar unsolved slaying there.

"This is for real," Frankie Sanders said.

Sanders, 86, said it's still a haunting sight to walk out the front door of his Eustis home and see a memorial across the street to 24-year-old Shelly Arnold.

Sanders saw Arnold's body on Feb. 19, 2015, in a wooded area, and he said he first thought it was a mannequin.

But the truth is that someone killed Arnold and dumped her partially dismembered body.

"When I saw this and heard about this out here, really, I was like, 'What happened out here?'" Sanders said.

Orange County deputies are also working to solve the McCarson slaying. The victim's remains were found in a wooded area April 6.

April 2017:

One year later, death of woman found dismembered still unsolved

http://www.orlandosentinel.com/news/crime/cold-cases/os-ethel-shannon-mccarson-dead-investigtion-20170321-story.html

In the year since McCarson’s killing, Orange County Sheriff’s Office Detective Theresa Pearce has made a few breakthroughs: She traced McCarson's last call to her mother to a cell phone at a bus station in Ocala and figured out that McCarson came to Orlando on a Greyhound bus. She went through hours of surveillance camera footage from the Orlando Greyhound station and found the moment McCarson got off the bus, with nothing but the clothes she was wearing, a scarf and a cross-body purse.

Investigators don’t know why McCarson came to Orlando or whether she knew anyone here. They don’t know where she went after she walked out of the Greyhound station’s surveillance camera frame: possibly to a white car that had just pulled into the parking lot, or maybe toward something else.

And they don’t know who killed her or where she died, though they know it wasn’t where she was found. They don’t know why her body was so violently mutilated after her death, or why it was left in plain sight near a busy road, fingerprints still intact.

2 years later, detectives still trying to solve dismembered woman's slaying
Ethel Shannon McCarson walked off the Greyhound bus, sat in the grass outside the station and had a brief conversation with a woman.

After about five minutes, McCarson, 42, got up and walked away. It was the last time she was seen alive. Two days later, April 6, 2016, her dismembered body was found off Old Winter Garden Road and North Cottage Hill Road.

Orange County Sheriff’s detectives spoke about her case on the two-year anniversary of her death in hopes of receiving tips leading to an arrest.

If they could get a better idea of the woman she was talking too, that may help. She has to be on video inside, maybe getting a bus ticket. Maybe she is in another state and hasn't seen herself on TV talking to McCarson. They chatted awhile and when McCarson left, she got on her phone. If they could spot her inside, maybe they could figure out where she was headed, after the chat with McCarson. IDK, I think she was dismembered because they either couldn't lift her, or had to put her in something that was small. I think I recall a suite case mentioned.

Here is a bit of her footage with the woman in red shirt. It´s case number 3

A $10,000 reward is a chunk of change. I wonder if they publicize that along with this video if it will jog memories of the travelers. There's a lot of business travelers that go through Orlando airport on a regular basis. There's some people who travel the bus system frequently. They don't suspect the woman speaking to her but I wonder if that woman remembers if she got in the white car.

Shannon was born September 23, 1973 in Rockmart, Georgia, daughter of Shirley Goss Williamson and the late John McCarson. She was a graduate of Rockmart High School and loved to dance. She enjoyed the sport of flying and had obtained her private pilot’s license.
