Multiple officers arrived on scene near Broadview Avenue and Gerrard Street around 12:30 p.m.

Police said the remains are believed to be that of an adult female and that they show little decomposition, meaning the death was recent.

Official confirmation that the remains are human will come with the coroner’s report, police said.

Toronto police Const. Jennifer Sidhu told 680 NEWS the area has been closed off and the homicide unit has been called in.

“They will be conducting tests to determine whether or not it is that of a human or that of an animal,” said Const. Sidhu. “Within the same building there is a meat shop.”

Det.-Sgt. Terry Browne said it's up to the coroner to determine whether or not the remains are, in fact, human, but said he's confident they belong to a light-skinned adult female.

Browne said it's too early to call the death a homicide, but did tell reporters at the scene "it's suspicious, obviously."

Browne said an employee at the butchers notified them about the grisly discovery around 11:20 a.m. ET. The remains were found in the Broadview Avenue and Gerrard Street East area, behind a Broadview butcher shop.

A forensics team removed a body bag containing some of the remains from the scene at around 7 p.m.

Browne said only a portion of the body has been found at this time and urged people in the area to be vigilant and report any suspicious behaviour. He added he believes other body parts may be discovered in the vicinity.

I am guessing, but sounds like she was dismembered? Interesting place to dispose of the body. I hope she is identified soon and can be laid to rest in a dignified manner. RIP.

Hmm.... this 27 year old woman was reported missing last Thursday, she was last seen about 15 miles from the location of the body parts.

Destiny McMannus "Twenty-seven-year-old Destiny McMannus was last seen Thursday around 6 p.m. at the Yorkdale bus terminal in the area of Dufferin Street and Allen Road. She is described as five-foot-six and about 110 pounds, with long straight brown hair and a thin build.
She was last seen wearing a puffy white jacket and white and black checkered pants"

Although Browne refused to say what “portion” of the woman was found, a source confirmed it was a torso.

“Certainly, as a detective, you wonder why someone would do something like that and leave the remains here,” Browne said. “To me it suggests it could be something from the neighbourhood, possibly, or someone who is aware of the meat industry and that perhaps there are times when companies would come and pick up remains or remnants, if you will.”

He said it’s possible the woman’s missing remains may be nearby and he encouraged area residents to check their property.

Browne also urged anyone who noticed suspicious activity in the area to come forward.

Tipsters can call 416-808-7400 or Crime Stoppers anonymously at 1-800-222-8477.

One possible witness spoke to police on Wednesday morning and told CP24 that he saw a suspicious van parked outside the butcher shop at around 3 a.m. Tuesday.

He said a man got out of the vehicle, came back a short time later and drove away down Broadview.

"I just thought it was a paper delivery guy," the man said, adding that he came forward to police after learning what had been discovered at the back of the building.

Police have said the remains are a partial torso, not a complete body, and they said they believe that they may belong to a white female. Browne would not confirm whether the remains were found in a bag or box, but said clothing was not found in the package.

Members of the public are urged to contact police if they discover anything suspicious in the vicinity of the butcher shop.

"I would be surprised if there aren't more parts somewhere in the area," Browne said.

Anyone with information is asked to contact police directly or Crime Stoppers anonymously.

This is the first thing I thought of as well, this 27 year old white female went missing two days prior to remains being found of a white female adult. I feel for the family.

An east-end transfer station for waste collection was shut down on Friday so forensic investigators could search for human remains after part of a woman's body was found outside a Toronto butcher shop earlier this week.

Investigators could be seen outside the Commissioners Street Transfer Station, which was closed to the public.
Police did not say Friday if any evidence was found.

Why is the title for this "found in a suspicious package?" Was the torso not found in the garbage unpackaged?

How truly horrible. Is it possible that CCTV in surrounding areas could be checked? Or is there no CCTV in public places in Toronto? (Hard for me to know, in London you're seen like by 5 different CCTV cameras a day just walking around)

Baird called the situation “mind boggling” and said he hopes police can get to the bottom of it.
Investigators are asking “anyone walking in the area that might have seen something that caught their attention” to contact them immediately.

“It could be anything,” Browne said.
“We suspect someone would have seen something in the area.”

He said police have been canvassing the neighbourhood and are working on obtaining video footage.
