Mahomet - Multiple police departments are on a manhunt in Mahomet by air and car after a man shoots a police officer. The man is considered armed and dangerous.

Mahomet Police say Saturday, May 7th just before 11:00pm, a Mahomet Officer stopped 34-year old Darcy "Clint" Pendelton for a minor traffic violation. He was released with a warning. Moments later Pendelton encountered another Mahomet officer in the 600 block of South Vine Street. Pendleton started a fight with the officer before pulling out a handgun and shooting the officer. The officer returned fire.

A manhunt was underway early Sunday for a "heavily armed" suspect who shot an Illinois police officer.

The Mahomet Police Department said one of its officers was shot on Saturday night and the suspect fled the scene.

"Officers from several area jurisdictions are conducting a manhunt," the force said in a statement. "The suspect is believed to be injured and heavily armed."

Detectives from the Mahomet Police Department say Pendelton then ran into the house where he was staying with his step brother, grabbed an AK-47 rifle and fled in a pickup truck.

Officers are still hunting for Pendleton who they say is heavily armed and injured.

The Illinois State Police have issued an alert for a man on the run after he allegedly shot a police officer on Saturday.

ISP reported that Dracy “Clint” Pendleton, 35, and a Mahomet police officer “exchanged gunfire” before Pendleton fled.

The officer, Jeremy Scharlow, who has been with the department for nine years, according to the (Champaign) News-Gazette, was shot in the arm. Police believe Pendleton was also injured, though they don’t know how or to what extent.

He is 5-foot-10, 155 pounds., with blond hair and blue eyes. He may be seeking medical treatment for his wounds, according to ISP, and he should be considered armed and dangerous, possibly possessing an AK-47.

Pendleton may be driving a white 2007 GMC pickup. His bond was set at $5 million.

(...) police told the family that Pendleton may have lost a finger in the exchange of gunfire with the Mahomet officer.

Police found blood inside the house where Pendleton returned after shooting the officer. He retrieved a long gun from the basement and emerged, firing more shots before leaving in a truck.

Dollahon said before Pendleton was married, he “lived in the forest in southern Illinois for almost a year, almost on a survival basis. He was kind of a caretaker for a guy down there. He liked to fish and hunt and browse in the woods.”

This is sad. So another officer racing to the initial call about the officer's shooting ends up crashing into a lady driving a van and the crash killed her. No word on status of the officer involved in the crash.

"The trooper had activated his flashing lights and siren."

The problem with emergency vehicles and LE doing that is that not everyone on the road sees them or even expects them to be speeding through intersections. The lady probably never even saw the flashing lights or heard the siren until it was too late.
I would think there is some ownership on the driver of any emergency vehicle to be sure the coast is clear before they barrel down the streets. Im not sure what rules they have to follow.
All I know is this is sad and has made this case even worse now.

I do hope LE ends up catching the guy involved in the shooting. He sounds like he has experience living in the woods so it may be hard for LE to find him. This case could get even more interesting than it already is.

A man who led authorities on a week-long manhunt through southern Illinois after being suspected of shooting a police officer was killed in a shootout, police said — and an FBI agent was also wounded in the fusillade.

Dracy "Clint" Pendleton, 35, was killed in a Sunday shootout at an abandoned house near the Shawnee National Forest, police said in a statement.

Authorities, using a remote controlled robot, discovered Pendleton's body on the second floor of the home with an assault rifle nearby.

"Pendleton is no longer a threat to the communities of southern Illinois," police said in the statement.
