Man held for trial in teen's death

A Homer City man was ordered Tuesday to stand trial on charges he caused a vehicle-pedestrian accident last spring in eastern Indiana County that killed a 16-year-old from Homer City.

At the conclusion of a preliminary hearing, Magisterial District Court Judge George Thachik ruled the state had presented sufficient evidence to send the case against Joseph Popovich, 20, to the Court of Common Pleas.

State police at Indiana accused Popovich of driving a Jeep Wrangler that hit Kai Hrabovsky, 16, of Cooper Avenue, following an underage drinking party early in the morning of May 14 in a wooded area along Mount Zion Road in Pine Township. Hrabovsky, a sophomore at Homer-Center High School, was struck about 3:35 a.m. along the road and died as paramedics were preparing to transport him in a medical helicopter.

Del Sordo said that, based on the lab report, his own investigation and the investigation reports of the other troopers, he charged Popovich with felony counts of homicide by vehicle while driving under the influence, causing an accident involving death or injury and homicide by vehicle; two misdemeanor counts of driving under the influence; and five summary traffic violations including failing to stop and give information and render aid.

Popovich remains free on bond while awaiting a trial date.

Homer City man pleads guilty in fatal DUI crash

Joseph Michael Popovich, of Homer City, on Friday pleaded guilty to felony counts of homicide by vehicle while driving under the influence and accidents involving death or injury to another person and a misdemeanor charge of driving while under the influence, according to Indiana County District Attorney Patrick Dougherty.

Kai’s Father, Daniel Hrabovsky, made a statement saying he and his family were satisfied with what they heard this morning in court, and hope to move on and continue to honor Kai’s memory.

Popovich faces a minimum sentence of three years and a maximum sentence of 21 years in state prison for his guilty plea.
Sentencing is currently scheduled for December 4th.

Motorist to serve 3 to 6 years for DUI fatality

Joseph Popovich, 21, was sentenced by Judge Thomas Bianco for his guilty plea to a felony count of homicide by vehicle while driving under the influence. The charge stems from the death of Kai Hrabovsky, 16, of Homer City, early May 14, 2016, on Mount Zion Road, where both had attended an after-prom party in a remote wooded area.

Popovich also pleaded guilty to causing an accident resulting in death or injury and driving under the influence.

Popovich also was ordered pay more than $6,000 in fines and court costs and to serve four years of probation following incarceration and parole.
