In what could become a death penalty case, a 20-year-old man is facing a string of felony charges — including murder, assault and torture — after a break-in last weekend at a Del Cerro home where two women were held at knifepoint.

Eduardo Jose Torres is accused of holding the two victims hostage, committing a sex act on one of them and fatally stabbing the other.

The woman who was killed was identified in court documents as Ut Nguyen, who lived in the house and was the mother of the homeowner. She was 74.

He looks so young and like he got caught with his hand in a cookie jar, but he may face a Death Penalty trial.

The 74 yr. woman was in the house with her son's 50 yr. old girlfriend and the son was locked out of his house while the women, his mother and girlfriend, were being attacked.

Nguyen and her son's 50-year-old girlfriend locked themselves in separate bedrooms, and Torres kicked down the door where the older woman was hiding and dragged her down the hall at knifepoint to the bedroom where the other woman was holed up, Di Tillio said.

...and...

Nguyen's 56-year-old son was locked out of his home during the women's ordeal because he had gone to check on his neighbors, the prosecutor said.

Imagine sitting in your own home feeling safe and this guy busts in.

The defendant is charged with murder and special circumstance allegations of murder during a rape, murder during oral copulation, murder during a burglary and murder that involved torture.

District Attorney Bonnie Dumanis has yet to decide whether Torres, who also faces charges of forcible oral copulation, assault during a burglary and torture, will face the death penalty or life in prison without parole if convicted.

A status conference is set for June 29.

Apparently, for years the neighborhood wanted a fence to protect them from trespassers from the canyon owed by San Diego State University. The problem was the easy access from the canyon where a lot of people end up wandering into their neighborhood. One woman shared on the news about once finding four strangers on her patio. Finally, they're getting the fence due to this recent tragedy.

For years residents in the area complained about graffiti, trespassing and vandalism, but on Thursday, residents took matters into their own hands.

On Wednesday, the university installed markers for what potentially could be a fence.

A spokesperson for SDSU said they have asked for extra patrols in the neighborhood.

A man accused of breaking into a Del Cerro home and holding two women at knifepoint, killing one of them, pleaded guilty Friday to murder and sex-crime charges.

As a condition of his plea, Eduardo Jose Torres, 21, agreed to be sentenced later to life in prison without the possibility of parole.

San Diego Superior Court Judge Michael Smyth scheduled the sentencing hearing for Aug. 4.

Nguyen's grandson, Egbert Doan, was at school when he got a call to return to the family home that day. Doan, who's in his early 20s, told Torres that he took away someone who was supposed to watch him graduate and raise a family, and said he wonders if things would have been different had he been home that night.

"I regret it every day," Doan said, "I feel so guilty."

Judge Michael Smyth said the plea agreement, which saved Torres from a potential death sentence, was reasonable in that it protected the community and punished Torres for his actions.
