A man accused of killing his girlfriend Sunday night by shooting her through the chest with a crossbow had a history of domestic violence, police said.

(...) on Sunday night, neighbors called 9-1-1 after 42-year-old Pamela Nightlinger, shot through the chest with a crossbow, stumbled to their home and collapsed in their doorway, bleeding profusely.

The bolt from the crossbow penetrated Nightlinger's body, then went through the couch and into the wall, said Philadelphia Police Capt. Anthony Ginaldi.

Officers arrived to find Nightlinger in a pool of blood. She was rushed to Aria Torresdale hospital where she died a short time later.

Shortly after he allegedly killed his new wife with a crossbow in June at their Northeast Philadelphia home, Paul Kuzan told a homicide detective that he had done it for the Lord.

"My judgment was cloudy," Kuzan said in a confession recorded by police about seven hours after the slaying. "I thought she was Satan. I took her life. I guess I am a cold-blooded murderer, but I would not turn my back on the Lord.

The recorded confession was shown at Kuzan's preliminary hearing Tuesday in Municipal Court, where he was bound over for trial on a murder charge in connection with the death of Pamela Nightlinger, 42.

At a hearing in August, Kuzan was found not competent to stand trial, according to court records. But that determination had been reversed by Tuesday, according to statements in court.

"He's actually pretty competent. He just needed some medication to get him there," Assistant Public Defender Wendy Ramos told District Judge Karen Y. Simmons before the hearing.

Jayaraman questioned why Kuzan's possible "mental health issues" didn't stop police from questioning him following Nightlinger's slaying. She also asked the detective if he was aware that Kuzan had swallowed all his jewelry at some point and had to be taken to a hospital. The public defender declined to confirm whether Kuzan had swallowed jewelry before or after his arrest.

NE Phila. man pleads guilty, gets 20-45 years for crossbow slaying of new wife

A Northeast Philadelphia man who told police he killed his new wife with a crossbow last June because he believed she was Satan pleaded guilty to third-degree murder Wednesday and was sentenced to 20 to 45 years in prison.

But before he was removed from a Philadelphia Common Pleas Court courtroom, Paul Kuzan listened to a half-hour of denunciation from the family of victim Pamela Nightlinger, 42, as well as his two biological children who described him as an overbearing religious fanatic.

Kuzan appeared stunned when his teenage daughter told Judge Kathryn Streeter Lewis, "I do not want to see him ever again after today. I want to erase him from my head. I hate him, I hate what he did."

She was followed by Kuzan's 12-year-old son, who said that Nightlinger and her ex-husband were more parents to him than Kuzan.
