(Peggy doesn't seem to have a thread on WS, hence starting this.)

Remains of missing nine-year-old girl who vanished in 2001 are found in woodlands near home

Authorities believe they may recovered the remains of a missing nine-year-old girl dubbed the German 'Madeleine McCann' who has been missing for the past 15 years.

Peggy Knobloch vanished on her way home from school in Thueringen, Bavaria in 2001.

After her abduction, and despite a massive police search, there was no sign of her body.

Despite this, one man served time for the nine-year-old's murder but was later released.

Bavarian prosecutor Herbert Potzel told the BBC the remains were 'most probably' those of Peggy Knobloch, although this was 'still not 100 per cent certain'.

A member of the public out looking for mushrooms in the woods outside Thueringen on Satuday discovered the remains and reported them to police.

Thanks for creating this thread. I'm glad Peggy has finally been found and can be given a proper funeral her parents must be devastated. Hopefully they will find the perps dna on Peggy's belongings or clothing.

After I made my original post I started to wonder if I'd jumped the gun in marking it "Found Deceased". It hasn't been confirmed that these are Peggy's remains and it's obviously possible they may not be. Still, I hope they are hers since there seems very little chance of the girl still being alive. As you say, at least it would allow her family to mourn properly.

I understand but given the watch Peggy was wearing and her belongings were found beside the remains its pretty much a certainty unfortunately. It was hard reading about Peggy's lasts words to her mother she said "I love you" as she left for school for the last time. This really brought home the devastating loss she must feel.

Body of a girl missing for 15 years — who bears striking resemblance to Madeleine McCann — found.

'German authorities were initially cautious to confirm that the body parts found over the weekend — just 14 kilometres from her home between Nordhalben and Rodacherbrunn — were those of little Peggy.

But according to Abendzeitung news, a Gera prosecutor announced that the remains were definitely those of Peggy.

The body was also found with personal items that matched hers.'

Dead neo-Nazi's DNA found near 9-year-old girl's remains

BERLIN — German authorities say DNA recovered from the site where a child’s remains were found has been linked to a dead neo-Nazi suspected in a string of killings.
Nine-year-old Peggy Knobloch disappeared in 2001. Her remains were discovered in July 2016 in central Germany’s Thuringia state.
Police and prosecutors in neighbouring Upper Franconia said Thursday that genetic material recovered from the site had been connected to Uwe Boehnhardt.
Boehnhardt died in November 2011 following a botched robbery with another suspected member of the far-right National Socialist Underground.

Authorities said they are determining how Boehnhardt’s DNA came to be at the site.

"Germany's 'Nazi bride' Beate Zschäpe has told judges she wants to testify about the brutal death of a nine-year-old girl thought to have been murdered by one of her lovers.

Two of the greatest crime dramas in German history converged in spectacular fashion recently when the DNA of neo-Nazi mass murderer Uwe Bönhardt was found on the corpse of the country's most famous missing girl."

A mentally backward man named Ulvi Kulac was found guilty of Peggy's murder and sentenced to life imprisonment in the city of Hof in 2004.

His conviction was declared unsound nine years later and he was freed in 2014....

Bönhardt and his sidekick Uwe Mundlos committed suicide in 2011 when they botched a bank raid aimed at financing their National Socialist Underground cell, which was dedicated to driving immigrants out of Germany.

Zschäpe, 41, the sole surviving member of the NSU gang, is on trial for her role in the murders of ten immigrant businessmen and a policewoman, which took place over a decade.
The trio believed if they killed enough immigrants, thousands of others in Germany would fear for their lives and head back to their countries of origin...

In the ruins of their hideout police also found a board game they invented called Pogromoly - an amalgam of pogrom and Monopoly - in which the winner was the player who herded the biggest number of Jews into gas chambers.

German authorities have been widely criticised for their failure to stop the group, which killed 10 people, robbed 14 banks and planted two nail bombs over 13 years.

On Tuesday, the Hessen branch of the domestic intelligence service, the Bundesamt für Verfassungsschutz, or BfV, admitted one of its agents had been present in April 2006 when two members of the NSU shot dead a 21-year-old Turk in an internet cafe.

It has now emerged the agent, who was transferred to less sensitive work following an investigation, openly held rightwing views and was known in the village where he grew up as "Little Adolf".

When police raided his flat following the murder, they found a cache of guns, for which he had a legitimate licence, and extracts from Mein Kampf, according to Der Spiegel. There were unconfirmed reports the man was present at three or more other neo-Nazi murder scenes.

The trio had made a DVD in which they boasted of the killings and said they had acted to serve the German nation and its people, describing themselves as the National Socialist Underground - echoing the national socialism (Nazism) of Hitler's Germany.
The story of the killers has dominated headlines in Germany for months now and given rise to one of the biggest scandals in post-war Germany.
It turns out intelligence agencies had had the group under surveillance for years, and even found a bomb-making factory in their garage back in 1998.
So why were the trio not stopped earlier? Why were they allowed to disappear and then stay underground? And why was it that security services blamed the murders on the Turkish mafia at the time?

The militant scene has always said we need people who are willing and able and trained in case it comes to civil war, and neo-Nazi propaganda always talks about civil war. The scene is armed. It's military.
"Weapons training is carried out in secret..."

Intelligence services say this is the fastest-spreading section of Germany's far-right movement.

They say the cliche of the neo-Nazi being a boot-wearing, young, unemployed male skinhead is out of date. Nowadays you cannot always tell who is a neo-Nazi and who is not.
The Free Forces are attracting a new crowd, including students and middle-class professionals. Germans speak of a new generation of Kravattennazis, literally "Tie Nazis", as opposed to the traditional Stiefelnazis, or "Boot Nazis".

They use modern forms of protest and are harnessing social media...

We spoke to Udo Pastoers, number two in the NPD, the legal political wing of the far right...

He showed me a campaign poster emblazoned with the phrase "German children need our country. Stop the German people dying out" in which two beautiful blonde parents frolic at a sandy water's edge with their blonde and beaming children...

"Imagine a country called Germany that is filled only with Africans, Arabs, Asians. Biology is our priority," he said.

the German authorities have some very difficult questions to answer about how and why they failed to stop the fugitives' 13-year run of violence which resulted in 10 murders – including the killing of a police officer and a series of attacks on Turkish immigrants – 14 bank robberies and at least two nailbomb attacks. The toll could rise as investigators reopen dozens of unsolved cases dating back to 1998.

Detectives were so sure that the perpetrators of the "Doner murders" were foreign gangsters, probably from Turkey, that they codenamed the investigation Operation Bosphorus. The victims' relatives were told their loved ones had probably got mafia connections and were in all likelihood mixed up in a drug-smuggling racket...

Less than an hour's drive west to the industrial town of Jena, one man was not surprised to be told that everyone in Zwickau had expressed their shock at the discovery of a Nazi terror cell living in their midst.

"We were all shocked to hear about [the nearby concentration camp] Buchenwald too," said Lothar König, a youth pastor from the inner city parish, with heavy irony. "How could any of us have known about it? None of us saw it." He took a long drag of his cigarette. "History is repeating itself. You can see it happening again - it's hard to watch, it's hard to understand, so people look away. They would much rather spend their evenings in the pub, or zoning out in front of the telly."

I wrote about the Uwe Bönhardt connection and the practical questions surrounding it on the thread of Inga Gerhricke, a young German girl who is still missing:

The authorities want to make absolutely sure that this find was not a result of cross contamination. (Germany had a bad case of cross contamination a few years ago, they were chasing a criminal woman who was wanted in hundreds of robberies and thefts because, as it turned out, her DNA had contaminated laboratory stuff at the factory where it was made ~ if I remember well.)

Shortly after Peggy's disapearance, her mother received an anonymous letter, saying that a woman like her did not deserve to have a beautiful Aryan child with blue eyes like Peggy. At that time, Peggy's mother was living with a companion from Turkey and she was wearing a headscarf. It is unclear if indeed she had become a Muslim, or if she still is, but at the time she had the look.

So has it been determined beyond a sliver of a doubt that the presence of Bönhardt's DNA is not a matter of cross contamination?

I don't know, I assume some new information has come in and that's why the connection is suddenly the news again, but most of the news articles about it are in German so I can't understand them.
