...Captain Richard Allen from the New York State Police said the body was burned beyond recognition. They do not know the gender or age. Although it's a remote area surrounded by fields, police are hoping someone saw or heard something.

"We're asking any people in the area that seen anything suspicious between maybe 7 and 12 o'clock anywhere in this area, or around the Avon, Caledonia area as well. If they could contact state police at 398-4100. Any little thing would help us," said Allen.

Maybe this is better suited in Crimes in the News thread :dunno: if so, mods please relocate...TIA

K9 units and drones are being used to comb the area for potential evidence in the investigation. Surveillance footage at nearby gas stations is also being reviewed to see if any unknown vehicles drove through the area at the time in question.

Anyone who may have seen or heard anything suspicious is urged to call State Police at (585) 398-4100.

These cases upset me as much as the dismemberment ones do. It really bothers me that someone could disfigure someone's loved one's remains in such a way. An insult to injury.

Wednesday, state police charged 35-year-old Aykut Ozkaynak and 42-year-old Mary Neverett with second-degree murder and tampering with physical evidence. In court paperwork, troopers identified the victim as Patrice S. Miller.

New York State Police Captain Richard Allen didn't want to release many details because state police are planning a news conference for Friday morning.

Gates man convicted of murder in Caledonia burned body case - October

It took a Livingston County jury just 40 minutes Tuesday to convict a Gates man after he and his girlfriend killed their roommate and burned her body last year.

Aykut Ozkaynak was found guilty of second-degree murder and tampering with physical evidence, Livingston County District Attorney Greg McCaffrey said.

Ozkaynak and Neverett killed Patrice S. Miller, 64, of Gates on July 4, 2016. The pair lived with Miller in Gates. McCaffrey said the pair smothered Miller to death, then burned her body to conceal evidence, and dumped the body on Lacey Road in Caledonia, Livingston County.

Ozkaynak will be sentenced Jan. 11, 2018.

Burned Body Convict: ‘I Would Give My Life for Patrice’s Life’ - November

The woman who pled guilty to being involved in the murder and burning of Patrice Miller cried as her attorney read an emotional statement to the judge, whom she knew was about to issue a significant prison sentence.

“If I could give my life for Patrice’s life, I would,” said Neverett’s statement. “I have cooperated with the District Attorney to the best of my ability.

Judge Dennis Cohen said that Neverett is entitled to some consideration and ultimately sentenced her to 19 years in prison and five years of post-release supervision.

District Attorney Greg McCaffrey said that Miller’s family accepts the sentence, but nothing will bring their family member back.

“While Ms. Neverett may have had a difficult life, she still has a life,” said McCaffrey. “Ms. Miller’s daughter doesn’t have a mom anymore, and her grandkids still don’t have a grandma anymore. Ms. Miller still participated in a killing that she deserves to go to prison for.”

Aykut Ozkaynak, the Gates man convicted of murder in connection with the 2016 death of his 64-year-old roommate, was sentenced to 25 years to life Thursday in Livingston County Court.

The sentence, handed down by Judge Dennis Cohen, is the maximum allowable.

“Nothing in the report suggests that the court should give any leniency or consideration for your future,” said Judge Dennis Cohen. “As the DA said, Ms. Neverett’s testimony was compelling. The jury found it compelling, as I did. She described the brutal way that you murdered Ms. Miller, held her down, suffocated her, left her lifeless body in the room and took a nap. […] Mary testified that you could hear [Miller’s] bones crack as you stuffed her into a bucket and took her out to a field and burned her.”
