Accused killer Reginald Gousse, of Rosedale, Queens, now has additional charges filed against him after assaulting a corrections officer and stealing a handcuff key, Nassau County District Attorney Denis Dillon announced today.

He was originally in the Nassau County Police Department's custody with a remand status while awaiting trial for the murder and attempted robbery of James Gottlieb, a Franklin Square Banker and father of three.

Dillon says that Gousse assaulted a female corrections officer and stole a handcuff key while in Brooklyn on Wednesday. A search and X-ray of Gousse came up empty in search of the key while still in Brooklyn. It wasn't until Gousse and his police escorts returned to Nassau County's East Meadow Jail that he could be thoroughly searched. The key was eventually found in his sneaker.

"He then assaulted a Nassau County Corrections officer and retrieved his sneaker," Dillon said in a statement. "During the struggle, Gousse was able to retrieve and swallow the key. He was then brought for an X-ray where it was determined that he had in fact swallowed the handcuff key."

A jailhouse informer, charged with impersonating a police officer and killing a Long Island man in January, was able to avoid deportation at the end of a prison term last year because of a series of interventions by the Queens district attorney's office...

"Someone did him an extraordinary favor," said Frank Kelly, one of the lawyers recently appointed to represent Mr. Gousse.

After he was set free last March, the police and prosecutors say, he began a series of fresh crimes that ended with the killing of James Gottlieb, 49, of Garden City, a husband and father of three. Mr. Gottlieb was stopped by a man impersonating a police officer as he drove home from his job as an assistant bank manager...

Carter sentenced Reginald Gousse, 32, to life behind bars without the possibility of parole.

In a high-profile incident that made national headlines, Gousse rented a dark SUV, affixed police lights to it, dressed as a police officer and tailed Gottlieb, an assistant manager at a bank in Cedarhurst, to Franklin Square on Jan. 5, 2005, Assistant District Attorney Fred Klein said. Gousse pulled Gottlieb over on Semton Boulevard and shot him twice when Gottlieb refused to hand over the keys to the bank.
