A 47-year-old murder suspect who was arrested in Kentucky late last month was allegedly hired by a woman 23 years ago to kill her husband's mistress, police said Monday.
Phillip Jude Kennedy, a five-year Nicholasville, Ky., resident who used to live in California, was arrested in Nicholasville on Sept. 30 in connection with the death of 45-year-old Marjorie Murphy.
A resident of the 4200 block of East 15th Street, Murphy was found beaten and stabbed to death in her garage by a friend who came to visit on March 20, 1982, said Long Beach police spokeswoman Nancy Pratt. Authorities have said that Murphy's slaying was staged to look like a burglary gone bad. Pratt said that Murphy allegedly had an affair with a married man, whose name was not released. When his wife, Alice Hartzell, learned about their relationship, she allegedly hired Kennedy to kill Murphy for an undisclosed sum, Pratt said. Hartzell, who later moved to Georgia, died in 2002 of natural causes, Pratt said.
