    Missing Albany man's car found

Albany police have a possible break in the case of a missing man.

Investigators said they found 66-year-old Joseph Murphy's car behind the Tivoli Lakes Apartments, but there is still no sign of Murphy. Forensic teams are looking through the car for any clues.

The 66-year-old was last seen by his brother on October 3. His family reported him missing on Saturday after he didn't show up for his own birthday party. His family said it's very unlike Murphy to just take off without telling anyone.

Right now police are considering his disappearance suspicious.

If you have any information on the whereabouts of Joseph Murphy, call the Albany Police Dept. at 458-5660.

Community fears fate of missing man

ALBANY -- The corner stool by the front door of the Bridge Diner, nestled at the end of a cobblestone stretch of Orange Street in the heart of Albany's West Hill, has been vacant lately.

The seat next to the Ms. Pac-Man video machine has been Joe Murphy's spot for as long as anyone can remember. But beginning about three weeks ago, the polite customer's early knock on the front door, just before opening time, was no longer heard. The absence has played on owner Steve Harris's mind.
"I knew something was wrong when I didn't see him starting around the 3rd of this month," Harris said. "I knew something was wrong 'cause Joe don't go nowhere."

Police also are worried, and they're investigating Murphy's disappearance as a homicide. Their fears were heightened Monday when his gray 2004 Subaru was found tucked behind an apartment building a few blocks from Murphy's home on McPherson Terrace, a tiny stretch of Clinton Avenue near Judson Street that retains its historic name.

Case Of Missing Albany Man Now A Homicide

    posted: October 29, 2005

Albany police are investigating the disappearance of an Albany man as a homicide.

Sixty-six year old Joseph Murphy disappeared nearly a month ago. He was last seen on October 3rd when he had lunch with his brother.

Police will not comment on why the investigation has changed from a missing person's case to a homicide investigation.

Murphy's car was found in a parking lot at an Arbor Hill apartment complex earlier this week. The vehicle was located only a few blocks from Murphy's McPherson Terrace home.

Woods searched for signs of missing man

    ALBANY, Nov. 2

Albany detectives are scouring a section of the city, looking for clues that could lead them to 66-year-old Joseph Murphy, who hasn't been seen since early October.

Police are searching the area where his car was found a few days ago. They’re treating this like a murder investigation, although they’re missing their most important clue – the body.

Last week Murphy’s 2004 Subaru Forrester was found in an apartment parking lot just outside the Livingston Avenue entrance to the Tivoli Nature Preserve.

Seventy-five police recruits were carrying out a grid search Wednesday morning through the hilly, densely wooded land in north Albany located between Livingston Avenue and Interstate 90.

“If somebody was going to dispose of a body they more than likely, if they were going to leave the car here, dispose of the body back in this area. It’s so heavily wooded and dense underbrush. You could dispose of a body pretty easily back here,” police spokesman James Miller said.

Although his car was found just last week Murphy was last seen Oct. 3, but was not reported missing for a number of days after that.

The retired newspaper printer lived a quiet routine. There’s no indication why someone would have wanted to kill him.

Police do not believe he was suicidal.

Murder Arrest in Albany Missing Man Case

    January 25, 2006

31-year old Manny McKinney was picked up two weeks ago in North Carolina...where he had moved and started a new life.

Investigators say McKinney gave them a statement about his involvement in 66-year old Joseph Murphy's death...and even though he's fighting extradition back here, they claim to have enough evidence to prosecute him.

James Tuffey/Albany Police Chief: “We do have a statement in hand from the individual for his participation in the crime of murder 2nd.”

Albany detectives got that statement from Manny McKinney when they arrested him January 11th in North Carolina.

That's where McKinney went after his landlord Joseph Murphy was reported missing by his family October 20th...and after police found evidence in Murphy's apartment that pointed them toward foul play.

Officers searched the Tivoli Park preserve a few blocks from Murphy's home after his car was found nearby...but found nothing.

McKinney allegedly told detectives he dumped Murphy's body...but didn't say where. James Tuffey: “The body has not been recovered yet. We have done very detailed searches for the body. We haven't come up with it but we're still working on that aspect of the investigation.”
