SWAT standoff underway, man holed up in home

A SWAT standoff has been underway for several hours with a man who is believed to have holed himself up inside a home at South 41st and Epsilon streets.
Police would not immediately confirm whether the standoff at 4060 Epsilon St. is related to a shooting in the same neighborhood overnight that left one San Diego police officer dead and a second wounded.

At an afternoon news conference, Zimmerman said it was "too early to tell" if the shooting erupted spontaneously or was an ambush. She said it was also unclear whether the officers, who were part of a gang suppression unit, were making a traffic stop or confronting a pedestrian.

Regardless, the shooting broke out shortly after police radioed they were making the stop. Zimmerman said an emergency call came only seconds later, prompting additional officers to swarm the scene.

A suspect, described as a Hispanic man, was shot and wounded in the exchange that erupted within seconds.

Police initially said the shootout started following a traffic stop, but Zimmerman later clarified that detectives were trying to determine whether it was a traffic stop or an attempt by the officers to check out a pedestrian.

“It happened extremely quickly, very quickly,” she said. “From the information that was put out that a stop was being made to that the officers called for emergency cover to when the other officers arrived on scene, we’re talking very, very quickly, Seconds to a minute or so. Very quickly.”

About nine hours after the shootout, heavily armed police officers surrounded a house about a half-mile away, one of them using a bullhorn to urge a man to surrender. Authorities also detonated several devices at the scene that made deafening booms.

BBM. Wow-- are these like "flash bangs"? Designed to scare, but not damage/ non-lethal? Or was this a robotic attack? Any news on this technique?
