Korryn Gaines, a 23-year-old mother of two, is dead and her 5-year-old son is in hospital after an hours-long standoff with police that ensued when Gaines refused to surrender to officers who presented an arrest warrant.

...
according to a press release from Baltimore County Police Chief Jim Johnson and the county police spokeswoman Elise Armacost, Gaines is said to have verbally threatened and waved a 12 gauge shotgun at officers throughout the 7 hour standoff.

At some point in the standoff, although Johnson did not make clear when, hostage negotiators were called in to work with Gaines.

Armacost told reporters that officers "exercised extreme patience" throughout the ordeal and interacted with Gaines' father to try to talk her down. Information obtained by the Baltimore Police Department also prompted hostage negotiators to contact mental health professionals, however Armacost would not reveal the specifics of that information due to patient protection laws.

According to Johnson, an assault warrant taken out by Gaines was being served to Courtney because of a prior domestic assault incident. Gaines was being served a "failure to appear" bench warrant from a March 10 traffic stop, during which she was arrested for resisting arrest and disorderly conduct.
[...]
According to the incident report, Gaines threw the tickets she was given out of the window and told police they would have to "murder" her before she exited her car. A physical struggle ensued as police removed Gaines from the car. Medics were later called to the scene per Gaines request.

All over a traffic ticket.
:shakehead:

I understand the car was hers, but not licensed nor did she have any car insurance. I've read people defending her "she don't have to follow the laws and rules" attitude because they think she's part of some movement they might support. What lawlessness? That scares me. She put her own children in danger in that car and in that house. Nothing honorable about it, IMO.

Kodi, 4-years-old at the time of the traffic stop, and an infant were in the car with Gaines when she was pulled over in March for not having a license plate. Instead she had a cardboard cutout in the place of a plate which read: "Any government official who compromises this pursuit to happiness and right to travel, will be held criminally responsible and fined, as this is a natural right to freedom."

The video at this link mentions her suffering a brain and mental disorder from being exposed to a sea of lead poisoning in the past. Really? -- and people on social media urging her to not comply with the police should be ashamed of themselves. They knew the boy was in that house. This isn't about a movement, IMO, this woman suffered from a mental illness maybe from lead poisoning. Now, same people who should feel shame encouraging her are going to invoke violence towards the police.

The incident involving Korryn Shandawn Gaines became a flash point on social media Tuesday as video taken by Gaines inside her home before the shooting was shared online.
Baltimore County police said her followers encouraged her "not to comply with negotiators' requests that she surrender peacefully."

Officers opened fire after Gaines, 23, pointed a legally-purchased Mossberg 12-gauge pistol grip shotgun at them and said, "If you don't leave, I'm going to kill you."

She managed to fire two rounds, and during the exchange of gunfire, her son Kodi Gaines was struck, the Baltimore County Police Department said. The boy was taken to Johns Hopkins Children's Center and was in good condition.

What Indy Anna said bears repeating -- "All over a traffic ticket." :shakehead:

Korryn Gaines, 23, engaged in a standoff with police at her apartment that began around 9:40 a.m. and ended around 3 p.m., when she pointed a shotgun at a tactical officer and threatened to shoot him. There was an exchange of gunfire between a tactical officer and Gaines, who fired two rounds from the shotgun.

A 5-year-old boy, now confirmed as Gaines' son, was inside the apartment during the barricade and was injured in the crossfire. Police still have not determined whether he was struck by a round from a police weapon or from Gaines' weapon. That remains under investigation.

The child, Kodi Gaines, was transported to Johns Hopkins Children's Center and remains there in good condition.

The man in the apt with her ran out with the one yr old because he was afraid for his life... afraid of her. That says alot. There are some on sm speaking out negatively about her and saying she brought this on herself. She has several videos on her ig... very confrontational with LE while she had her 5 yr old filming. Hopefully it's not too late for someone to make a difference in his life. jmo

Police said the officer reported that the cardboard on the back of the car said, "Any government official who compromises this pursuit to happiness and right to travel, will be held criminally responsible and fined, as this is a natural right and freedom." The piece of cardboard on the front of Gaines' car had "Free traveler" written on it, police said.

The officer said he then asked Gaines for her driver’s license and registration, but she said he did not have the authority to ask her for any information, according to the police report. And when he asked her again for her driver’s license and registration, she said again that he didn’t have the authority to ask her for it.

thanks for all the links. from this link - i was shocked (but perhaps naive) to read that there were 3 officers serving the warrant

Police said the incident started at 9:20 a.m., when three officers went to the unit block of Sulky Court in Randallstown to serve an arrest warrant on a man and a woman. The man was wanted for assault. The woman was wanted on a failure-to-appear bench warrant stemming from an array of traffic charges, including disorderly conduct and resisting arrest. Gaines was charged after a traffic stop last March.

The standoff began just before 9:30 a.m. Monday when three police officers knocked on Gaines’ door intending to serve two arrest warrants: one for Gaines’ previous traffic violations and another for another man inside the home.

i thought the biting comment was related to the march car incident?

It makes me sick to think people would encourage anyone with a child to not comply with officers in what was a very dangerous situation. That's like throwing water on a grease fire. Why would anyone make statements that would only escalate a situation?!? What is wrong with people? I worry for this young boy, all that he has seen and heard during his short, impressionable time...his mothers death, and his injury, although brought on by her actions, could simply reaffirm any negative thoughts he probably has of LE.

1.Obey police.
2.Do not point a weapon at police.

I think she is into the same type of anti govt movement as the Dallas police shooter was. Timothy McVeigh was into the anti govt mivement as well.

It started out as white people and now it has spread to blacks, it seems.

It is similar to the Malheur stand off people as well.

It would be humorous if there were not often such tragic consequences. These people are obviously dedicated believers to the idea that if the US govt is unjust, it is their right to fight against it, It is quite a common sentiment, not just to radical groups either.

It seems like people have their own ideas of when it is right and just to fight against the govt.

He seems like a darling little boy. I hope he receives heavy duty therapy,

We've got mental illness, easy access to guns, sovereign citizen beliefs, egging on from social media, and cops trying to serve a warrant. Put those things together and we've got a recipe for disaster. :(

That poor child.
