A woman has died and up to five people have been injured in a possible terrorist knife attack in central London.

Police confirmed a man was arrested after being seen 'brandishing a knife' and 'injuring people' in front of horrified onlookers in Russell Square last night.

The Met said the suspect was detained after being Tasered at the scene at around 10.40pm.

Officers from local police units arrested a man minutes after being called at 10.33pm. A Taser was used by one of the arresting officers.

As detail emerged, the decision was made to have the counter-terrorism command involved in the investigation.

The police statement said: “Terrorism is one possibility being explored at this stage.”
“A man was arrested at 22:39 hours and a Taser was discharged by one of the arresting officers. Additional police units have been deployed to the area to provide reassurance.

“Anyone with information should contact police on 101 or call Crimestoppers anonymously on 0800 555 111.

“Terrorism is one possibility being explored at this stage.”

Scotland Yard had earlier on Wednesday announced an extra 600 officers armed officers were being deployed on patrol in London after the recent terror attacks in France and Germany.

More to follow soon ...

“We came around the corner and there were armed police everywhere … a massive police presence … and a corpse lying in the street covered in a blanket.

“Apparently it was a gang stabbed a woman and she’s dead.
“We went into the bar across the street and the officers came to interview us … we didn’t actually see anything but some people in the bar saw something.”

Extra police have been deployed in the area to provide reassurance.

The full police statement said: “Police were called at 22:33 hours on Wednesday 3 August to reports of a man seen in possession of a knife injuring people at Russell Square, WC1.

“Officers attended the scene along with the London Ambulance Service. Up to six people were found injured at the location.

“A female (no further details) was treated at the scene but was pronounced dead a short time later. We await an update on the condition of the other persons injured and details of any other injuries.

The police spokesman at Scotland Yard said a 19 year old man is in police custody in hospital. The attack is believed to involve mental health issues. The lady who sadly died is in her 60s according to Sky news UK.

^ What's wrong? Sounds like it could be a guy who is mentally ill.

Sounds like mh not terrorism to me...

The attacker is a 19 year old Somalian Norwegian. So they know his age and have already decided the cause was "mental health issues" but aren't releasing his name.

What is it noteworthy to not release his name?

(And I read Norwegian Somalian not the other way around?)

Are the laws different than the US about releasing suspect's names?

The only other thing I can think of is they believe he'd be in danger if they released it.

Or maybe they're not sure of his identity?

There are various circumstances under which a suspect's name would not be released straightaway. Are they automatically released in the USA?

Why is it always blamed on mental health? Some people are just vicious *advertiser censored**holes. If this is the case, wouldn't all murderers be mentally ill?

ISIS LINK TO MENTALLY ILL AND HOW THEY ARE GROOMED ONLINE

Daily Mail

The Russell Square knife attack followed warnings that ISIS grooms people with mental health problems to inspire them to carry out murder.

Assistant Commissioner Mark Rowley, head of specialist operations at the Metropolitan Police, said ISIS is trying to 'pick up' potential fighters among 'the vulnerable, people with violent backgrounds, very young people and those with mental health issues'.

In 2008, 22-year-old Nicky Reilly - who had a mental age of 10 - attempted to carry out a suicide bombing in Exeter after he was contacted by extremists online.

ISIS will often use internet forums or social media to brainwash the vulnerable.

Today's murder came just days after a schizophrenic knifeman who tried to behead a Tube passenger during an Islamic State-inspired rampage was sent to Broadmoor high-security hospital to begin a life sentence.

Somali-born Muhiddin Mire, 30, targeted strangers at random in the ticket hall at Leytonstone Underground station in east London on December 5 last year.

He will serve a minimum of eight and a half years before being considered for parole.

But Mire could serve the entirety of his sentence at the psychiatric unit, which has housed some of the country's most notorious criminals.

I guess the killer did not live in that area, or did he? So what was his inspiration? Peaceful Zen-Buddhism?

From the description of the attack and his behaviour afterwards, he might well have been high on drugs, for instance Captagon.

Great, so the government can blame mental illness on terror attacks instead of ISIS. Awesome.

Could be one, the other, or both, as it has been in previous cases.

From the BBC:
What we know about the Russell Square attacks
Posted at 15:42 GMT

- A man targeted six people with a knife in Russell Square, central London, at about 22:30 last night

- An American woman, believed to have been in her 60s, was fatally stabbed. Matthew Barzun, US ambassador to the UK, described the news as "heartbreaking" in a tweet, adding: "My prayers are with all the victims and their loved ones."

- A 19-year-old man, a Norwegian national of Somali origin, has been arrested on suspicion of murder. He emigrated from Norway in 2002.

- Two women and three men suffered "various injuries" in the attack, with two remaining in hospital and the other three discharged. None is in a life-threatening condition. Those injured are Australian, American, Israeli and British.

- The victims were selected at random in a "spontaneous" rampage and no evidence has been found that the attack was motivated by terrorism, Scotland Yard said.

- London mayor Sadiq Khan has called for the public to remain "calm and vigilant".
