In a 32-page indictment that revealed the Mafia is still hanging around even after decades of arrests and long prison sentences, federal prosecutors charged 46 members and associates of five La Cosa Nostra crime families for a sprawling criminal enterprise with operations from Massachusetts to Florida. The long list of crimes includes assault, gun trafficking, loan-sharking and health care fraud, while the defendants’ nicknames—like Tony the Cripple, Rooster and Tugboat—evoke the bygone era of mob movies like The Godfather or Goodfellas.

Federal agents arrested alleged gangsters from four out of the five New York crime families, busting members of the Genovese, Gambino, Lucchese and Bonanno clans, plus Joey Merlino, the reputed head of the Philadelphia mob, along with made members and associates in Massachusetts, New Jersey, Florida and Costa Rica, federal prosecutors said.

Richard Mangan, a criminal justice professor at Florida Atlantic University and former Drug Enforcement Administration agent, tells Newsweek he was surprised to see such a large bust targeting La Cosa Nostra, as opposed to more active Russian or Mexican organized crime operations. “It may be twilight, but it’s not nighttime,” he says of the Italian mob. “There wouldn’t be an indictment like this if there wasn’t significant crime. I’m going to use this indictment in my course.”

Accused mob boss headed to trial for racketeering

Accused Genovese mob boss Eugene “Rooster” O’Nofrio has given up on plea talks and is headed to trial for racketeering.

O’Nofrio and reputed Philadelphia mob boss Joey “Skinny Joey” Merlino have been accused of being leaders of what the government has dubbed the East Coast La Cosa Nostra Enterprise, a conglomerate of different mob families working together across multiple states.

They are going on trial Jan. 16.

This week, reputed Philadelphia mob boss Joseph “Skinny Joey” Merlino, 55, once again will find himself in a federal courtroom — fighting a case that could force him to grow old in prison.

The charges, unveiled by prosecutors in 2016, are all crimes that Merlino has faced and fought before – racketeering, conspiracy, illegal gambling – with one significant exception. In a first, investigators allege that Merlino led a Mafia attempt to muscle into health-care fraud with a racket involving prescriptions for topical pain creams.

Jury selection is set to begin Monday (today) in Manhattan The trial, which will play out over the next month in New York, is the result of a multiyear investigation that Merlino’s lawyers, Edwin Jacobs and John Meringolo, have characterized as thin on evidence, mishandled by agents, and aimed at dismantling an organization they say doesn’t exist.

Forty-six purported mobsters and associates were swept up in the dragnet as authorities nearly two years ago unsealed their indictment detailing the workings of an entity described as the “East Coast La Cosa Nostra Enterprise.”
