Investigators confirm all three suspects are in custody and the highway is once again open.

Kelly Jameson with the Dona Ana County Sheriff's Office clarified late Friday it all started during a routine traffic stop in Hatch at about 3:40 p.m.

Chavez, the Hatch police officer, pulled the suspects over on Franklin Street near "Franciscan RV," a small business. A man inside the car exited and shot Chavez, Jameson said. A second police officer arriving at the scene witnessed the shooting and called for backup.

It was reported earlier that Officer Chavez appeared in pretty good shape, but apparently he died after being airlifted to a hospital. Condolences to his wife and children.

A Hatch police officer died Friday evening after being shot during a traffic stop.

Officials took three suspects into custody hours earlier and said they were allegedly responsible for the officer shooting as well as a carjacking and shooting another man at a rest stop off Interstate 25 in a crime spree that triggered a massive manhunt.

[...]

After calling for medical help, the officer who witnessed the shooting began to chase the occupants in the gray Lexus, who had fled from the scene, Jameson said. The chase, along southbound I-25, reached speeds in excess of 100 mph, and the officer was unable to “catch up to that vehicle,” she said.

Condolences to Officer Chavez's colleagues, too. This is also a difficult loss for them. The condition of the civilian who was shot is unknown.

Why do people have to kill people? STOP IT!!!

[h=1]Suspects in Hatch, NM PD officer killing linked to nine Ohio murders.[/h]
The Chillicothe Gazette is also reporting Hanes and Nelson are the prime suspects in April's bloody execution-style shootings of eight family members in Pike County, Ohio. Their bodies were found on four different properties. Three children, ages 4 days, 6 months and 3 years, were found alive.

omg!

Information regarding connection to Rhode murders with regard to having been reported by the Chillicothe Gazette has been determined untrue.

A connection to the Rhodens remains nebulous, IMO.

From Twitter:

@CGEditor (Michael Throne, Editor)

. @ChilliGaz has not reported a link between Nelson/Hanes and the Pike County murders. The story by @abc7breaking is inaccurate.

KVIA ABC7 removed that information from their reported and included this:

Editors note: Overnight, ABC-7 reported the men were also suspects on the killing of a family in Pike, County, Ohio. That information did not come from the Chillicothe Gazette and is not confirmed at this time. We apologize for the error.

My take is either they have information from law enforcement they cannot source at this time or they completely misread something into the Gazette reporting that is not there.

Three men taken into custody regarding the shooting and murder of Officer Chavez:

The driver briefly barricaded himself inside the vehicle before surrendering. Deputies found that he had suffered a gunshot wound to the thigh.

Deputies then continued the search for the two additional suspects.

A passerby alerted deputies of two men who were "acting suspicious"near the 2400 block of Rincon. Deputies said the two men fit the description of the suspects.

Two of the men involved were wanted in Ross County, Ohio:

James D. Nelson II and Jesse D Hanes — wanted for the July 25 shooting death of a Ross County man — are in custody in New Mexico.

Early Saturday, Lt. Mike Preston of the Ross County Sheriff's Office confirmed they have received word from New Mexico officials that Nelson and Hanes were taken into custody on the warrants out of Ross County.

Nelson, of Newark, and Hanes, of Columbus, in connection to the July shooting death of 62-year-old Londonderry resident, Theodore Timmons, who was found dead in his home on Poes Run Road July 25. Both men have criminal records in Ohio.

Additional reporting by the Gazette said that a car associated with Nelson and Hanes was located near Newark, Ohio in Licking County on July 30.

Lt. Mike Preston, of the Ross County Sheriff's Office, said the 1999 Ford Escort was recovered Saturday. Ohio Bureau of Criminal Investigation officials will execute a search warrant on the vehicle.

The car was found in the Newark area, Preston said, but an exact location was not immediately available. Newark police found the vehicle, but they would not provide further details on the location.

A third person suspected to be connected to the Ross County, Ohio murder was taken into custody there in late July:

Whitney Kuhn, 24, who is charged with complicity to aggravated burglary and complicity to aggravated robbery, is being held in the Ross County Jail, according to online jail records.

A third suspect [in the Ross County murder], 24-year-old Whitney Kuhn of Bourneville was arrested and charged with complicity to aggravated robbery and complicity to aggravated burglary.

If Kuhn is in the Ross County, Ohio jail (and potentially a woman going by Hanes' Facebook friends), who is the third man arrested in New Mexico who was with Hanes and Nelson?

Kuhn is a confirmably a woman (see my next post.)

R.I.P. Officer Chavez[emoji257]

Thoughts, prayers and condolences to his family and friends.

Cold.

These guys did not want to be taken in.

According to a release from the sheriff's office Saturday morning, Chavez pulled the suspects over on Franklin Avenue near a PicQuik convenience store. A school resource officer Chavez called to assist reported seeing Chavez at the passenger side of a silver, four-door Lexus. The assisting officer said Chavez was holding paperwork, but appeared to also be reaching for his service weapon. The officer said he saw smoke and that Officer Chavez fell to the ground.

Presumably these two would be the carjacking victim from the rest area and the driver of the vehicle that was stopped by Officer Chavez.

Two people who were shot and wounded in a violent shooting spree in which a Hatch police officer was killed are being treated at University Medical Center in El Paso.

The two people, whose names haven’t been released, are in stable condition, UMC spokesman Ryan Mielke said Saturday morning.

Hanes has been charged with the murder of Officer Chavez.

No information in this article regarding any charges for Nelson or the unnamed third man.

Dona Ana County Sheriff's confirm that a 36-year-old man who reportedly had an outstanding warrant for aggravated murder in Ohio has been arrested and charged in the shooting death of Hatch Police Officer Jose Chavez.

Jesse Hanes, from Columbus, OH, currently faces one count of willful and deliberate first-degree murder with additional charges pending.

Hanes was apparently driving the car when he was apprehended. Unclear, but this article also suggests he was driving when they were stopped by Officer Chavez.

Hanes briefly barricaded himself inside the car. He suffered a gunshot wound to his upper right thigh. The wound appeared to be self-inflicted, authorities said.

Hanes was taken to a hospital, where he remained Saturday morning.

Wonder how he managed to shoot himself in the thigh?

Also wondering where they got the Lexus.

A third person who was originally thought to have been involved was actually a hitchhiker, and is now considered to be witness and not a suspect, [DACSO spokesperson] Jameson said.

Hanes won’t be booked until after he is released from the hospital, which could be as soon as Sunday afternoon, Jameson said.

FBI investigators were in Las Cruces on Saturday helping to process evidence, Sheriff Enrique “Kiki” Vigil said. They could not say yet why Hanes and Nelson were in New Mexico.

Law enforcement agencies from around the state are scheduled Monday to participate in a procession for a Hatch police officer killed Friday during a traffic stop.

Las Cruces police said the body of Jose Chavez was transported to Albuquerque for autopsy and will return to his hometown of Las Cruces on Monday.

Funeral services are scheduled for later this week.

Officials say law enforcement agencies, fire departments and others along Interstate 25, from Albuquerque and Las Cruces, will join in the procession as the motorcade approaches
