Memphis Commercial Appeal:

Nine dead in South Memphis house fire; deadliest since 1920s

---
Memphis Fire Director Gina Sweat confirmed the deaths during a 9 a.m. press conference. She said one child pulled from the residence was still fighting for his life at LeBonheur Children’s Medical Center.
---
Fire officials said 10 people were in the home in the 1100 block of Severson Avenue, off Walker Avenue, when crews arrived at 1:22 a.m.

The cause of the fire remains under investigation.
---
Neighbors said firefighters pulled victims from the one-story brick house and laid them on the front lawn. The bodies were covered with a tarp.

“I’ve never seen firemen cry, but they were bawling like babies when they brought the children out,” said Shondra Hampton, whose family lives next door. “We’ve all lived over there for 40 years and we are just devastated.”

Seven children were among 11 people who died when a horrific fire trapped them inside a one-story Memphis home early Monday morning.

Pictures of the devastation showed the innards of the brick building torched. The outside of the house was left largely untouched. Metal bars remained over almost all the windows. Only one was broken open, by the fire crew that tried in vain to save the people inside.

Nine dead in South Memphis house fire; deadliest since 1920's (THE TENNESSEAN PAPER)

Three adults and six children perished in a South Memphis house fire early Monday morning in what officials called the city’s deadliest fire in nearly a century.

One other child pulled from the home in the 1100 block of Severson was clinging to life late Monday at Le Bonheur Children’s Hospital.

A fire happened in the Bay Area back in 1997 where the house's windows were covered with bars killing nine people, mostly children.

Trapped by makeshift burglar bars intended to protect their home, nine people, mostly children, died in a suspicious two-alarm blaze that ravaged their East Palo Alto house early Saturday.

Fire officials said the blaze was especially tragic because some deaths could have been prevented.

"With illegal bars on the house, the only exit was where the fire started," said Fire Chief Rick Tye. "Basically there was only one way in and only one way out."

If the bars had been up to code - meaning they could be opened from the inside - Tye said at least those in the back bedrooms could have been spared.

Firefighters also said an exit door from the garage, which had been converted into a bedroom, was padlocked from the inside without a key.

Family says 8-year-old house fire victim will donate organs to help save someone else
Cameron Jett, 8, has been on life support since firefighters pulled him out of his burning Memphis home. Nine of his family members--6 brothers and sisters and 3 adults--all died in the fire.

Cameron's family said they made the difficult decision to allow doctor's to take Cameron's organs and use them to help other families in need.

Hate hearing those type of stories.
