A Cleveland police officer has been indicted for negligent homicide in the 2015 death of an unarmed 18-year-old breaking and entering suspect, according to Cuyahoga County Prosecutor Timothy McGinty.

The prosecutor's office said Patrolman Alan Buford was charged by a Cuyahoga County Grand Jury with fatally shooting Brandon Jones outside a Parkwood Avenue store during the early morning hours of March 19, 2015.

Cleveland police officer indicted on negligent homicide charge in shooting of unarmed burglary suspect

The shooting happened after a struggle with Buford and fellow officer Greg King who were called to the scene to investigate, according to police reports. Buford fired the fatal shot, according to reports.

Jones had already left the store, which he broke into at 2 a.m. that night by prying open the door with a crowbar, police said. He was holding a bag stuffed with cigarettes and Canadian currency, but was unarmed.

He died later that morning at MetroHealth Hospital.

Cleveland police union to raffle gun in fundraiser for officer accused of shooting teen

The Cleveland Police Patrolman’s Union has come under fire for raffling off a Glock pistol to raise money for an officer accused of shooting an unarmed teenager.

A flier, posted in the Cuyahoga County Justice Center, advertises a fundraiser at the CPPA Memorial Hall. For a $20 donation, attendees are entered to win a Glock 26 and a smart TV.

CPPA President Steve Loomis said no offense was ever intended.

"Raffling off a Glock in a police community is like raffling off M&Ms at a kid's birthday party," Loomis said.
