The Luther College Community is mourning the loss of Luther student Bjorn Norderhaug following the discovery of his body Sunday morning.
Decorah Police Chief Bill Nixon said at this point, foul play is not suspected in the student’s death. Norderhaug was a senior computer science major from the Twin Cities.
Norderhaug’s body was discovered at about 9:30 a.m. Sunday, according to Police. The Winneshiek County Sheriff's Office received a report of a body located in the Upper Iowa River near Clay Hill Road, outside of Decorah.
Rescue crews with the Decorah Fire Department and the Winneshiek Medical Center Ambulance crew were able to recover the body from the river. The Sheriffs Office, with the assistance of the Winneshiek County Medical Examiner's Office, was able to determine the identity as Norderhaug.
Norderhaug was reported missing Saturday at about 6:30 p.m. He was last seen Saturday, Sept. 17, at 1:50 a.m. in the downtown Decorah area. Decorah Police, aided by Luther College staff, immediately began a missing person investigation.
As a continuation of the investigation, at approximately 7:30 a.m. Sunday morning, Decorah Police, Decorah Fire Department and Luther College staff conducted an area search along the Upper Iowa River.
“There is nothing that would give that indication (of foul play). We won’t know much until the autopsy is completed. We’ll reserve any comment on what the cause is until then,” Nixon said.
The State Medical Examiner’s Office is conducting the autopsy, and Nixon said he probably would have a final report in six to eight weeks.
The incident remains under investigation. Anyone with any information is asked to call the Decorah Police Department at 563-382-3667.
“I would guess we aren’t going to know what happened in a definitive way. There probably isn’t anyone going to be able to tell us what happened during the time he was unaccounted for,” Nixon said.
