Surgeons have reattached a toddler's leg in a marathon operation as his mother, accused of severing the limb with an axe, undergoes psychiatric assessment.

The 17-month-old boy was rushed to Melbourne's Royal Children's Hospital after his mother allegedly attacked him at a house at Mont Albert, in the city's east, early today.

Police said an axe had been used in the attack.

Hospital spokeswoman Julie Webber said a team of three plastic surgeons, two orthopaedic surgeons, a general surgeon, two anaesthetists and five nurses worked for more than eight hours to save the boy's leg.

``He is in a critical but stable condition in intensive care,'' Ms Webber said.
``We won't know until the end of the week if the reattachment was successful.''

Acting Sergeant Andrew Huntington said the boy's 21-year-old mother was arrested at the Bundoran Parade home after police were called to the scene about 2am (AEDT).

The Department of Human Services was investigating the incident.

``We have no idea as to what led to it, what caused it (the attack), and the 21-year-old female is obviously assisting police with our inquiries,'' Sgt Huntington said.

``As to what took place, we really don't know at this stage.

How horrible for that poor child. Prayers that the reattachment works. It will be a week before they know if the surgery is successful.

What is wrong with people. This poor little guy, I hope it works.

October 2006:

AN "unequivocally crazy" woman who obeyed voices in her head and attacked her toddler son with an axe has been found not guilty of intentionally causing serious harm.

But the woman, who cannot be named, was remanded in custody to a psychiatric facility for a nominal period of 20 years, after being found to have been suffering from mental impairment.
The 17-month-old boy had his right leg almost cut off below the knee in the attack...

Ms Cannon said the woman, now 22, had told other residents at the house she had been reading a Bible before the incident took place in the bathroom of the house.

She said the woman had told residents "I had to do it. It said in there (the Bible)."

The toddler was taken to the Royal Children's Hospital and underwent an eight-hour operation where surgeons managed to save his leg.

Dr Mark Ryan, who treated the woman between December 5, 2005, and July, 2006, at the Thomas Embling Hospital in suburban Fairfield, said she suffered from schizophrenia.

Dr Ryan said the woman had been treated for a mental illness previously and had stopped taking medication a month prior to the attack.

"In my opinion she was psychotic at that period of time," Mr Ryan told the court.
"She had delusional ideas and hallucinations."

Oh good, his leg was saved - and hopefully he won't have any memory of what happened.
