Firefighters responded shortly before 6:30 Tuesday morning to a report of a potential gas leak at 300 West 234th St. in the Kingsbridge neighborhood, a fire department spokesman said.

Upon arrival, firefighters discovered what appeared to be a marijuana grow house in the building, and reported it to police at 7 a.m., law-enforcement officials said. Firefighters and police were in the process of evacuating the home when the explosion occurred, officials said.

A second suspect was arrested Wednesday in connection with the Bronx drug house explosion that killed a beloved FDNY battalion chief, sources said.

The man, identified as Garibaldi Castillo, 32, is expected to be charged with two counts of felony marijuana possession, sources said.

Investigators were still grilling Julio Salcedo, 34, who is believed to be a renter at the pot-filled home that blew up Tuesday.

Lt. JonPaul Augier, of Ladder Company 1, described Fahy as a "brilliant guy" who "graduated at the top of his class from New York Law School."

"He passed the (New) Jersey and New York State bar exam in the same (month)," Augier said.

But Fahy also knew how to have a good time.

"At 3'o clock in the morning after coming back from an alarm, Mike Fahy would break out the guitar," Augier recalled. "He'd sing to us, play the guitar, jam a little bit."

RIP Chief Fahy :rose:

The trial is set for April for two men accused in a Bronx marijuana grow house explosion and fire that killed FDNY Battalion Chief Michael Fahy.

The trial for suspects Garivaldi Castillo and Julio Salcedo, who are accused of running the large marijuana grow house that caused the explosion, is scheduled to begin on April 10 in Bronx County Supreme Court.

Guilty pleas announced for men linked to Bronx explosion that killed FDNY battalion chief

Garivaldi Castillo, 33, and Julio Salcedo, 36, pleaded guilty in state Supreme Court in the Bronx on Friday to charges including second-degree manslaughter and first-degree criminal possession of marijuana.

"This is an extremely rare instance where someone is being held criminally responsible for conditions that caused the death of a firefighter in the line of duty in New York City," Darcel Clark, the Bronx district attorney, said in a statement.

The defendants will be sentenced August 17 with Castillo facing two to six years, and Salcedo facing as many as four years in prison.
