He departed driving a yellow 1973 Ford Courier pickup truck with a white camper shell. When he didn't show up in Fort Bragg, it was assumed he had returned to Arizona. On Sunday, 6 March 1988, a scrap metal collector found Clyde's remains. He was wedged beneath an abandoned refrigerator in Chadbourne Gulch along CA Route 1, two miles south of Westport CA and 13.5 miles north of Fort Bragg. Clyde was identified by his dental records. Forensic autopsy by the San Francisco Medical Examiner showed Clyde had died of multiple firearm wounds, including a bullet in the head.
