Details of Disappearance

Malinoski attended a conference on men's issues in Westchester, Pennsylvania in October 1996. On October 24, 1996, he left the conference and checked into the Pine Tree Motel in Gaines, Pennsylvania; he had stayed there before. Malinoski has not been seen since.

The day after he was last seen, his rented 1995 Nissan Sentra was found in the parking area at the Barbour Rock access on the west rim of the Pennsylvania Grand Canyon. There was no evidence of foul play in or around the vehicle. It appeared as if Malinoski had gone for a hike on the canyon's trails, something he enjoyed doing, but an extensive search of the canyon turned up no signs of him.

At the time of Malinoski's disappearance, he was divorced and living with a roommate in Yardley, Pennsylvania. He was not dating anyone and dreamed of moving to the Pacific Northwest to be closer to his young son, who was living with his ex-wife.

Malinoski's loved ones describe him as a meticulous and considerate person who was not suicidal and had no reason to disappear. He was a vegetarian in 1996, did not use drugs, and only rarely drank alcohol. Malinoski's credit cards and Social Security number have not been used since his disappearance. His case remains unsolved.

Circumstances of Disappearance

Michael Malinowski arrived in Tioga County October 24, 1996, from his home in Yardley and checked in at the Pine Tree Lodge in Gaines. He reportedly made a phone call to his roommate that afternoon; that was the last time anyone heard from him.

On October 27 a Forestry Bureau worker found Malinowski's rented 1995 Nissan Sentra in the parking area at the Barbour Rock access, on the Pennsylvania Grand Canyon west rim, and he was reported missing. In the car were a box of low-fat Cheez-its, a two-thirds-empty jug of spring water and tan, rubber-soled boots. An empty camera box sat on the dash; a cassette was on the car's tape player.

According to friends and family Malinowski had no reason to disappear, and was not suicidal. He was not in debt, nor depressed. He was a vegetarian, didn't use drugs and rarely drank. He wasn't in a romantic relationship at the time. He was recently divorced and had a 10 year old son. His Social Security number hasn't been used. His credit cards show no activity since 1996. Searches failed to find any trace of him.
