Steven Carl Gwinn
Murdered 11 June1988

BACKGROUND
Gwinn had a criminal record. He pled guilty to a narcotics charge in March 1976, when he was about 31 years old. On 22 September 1987, Gwinn was arrested for assault with a deadly weapon when he reportedly threatened some people he accused of a minor theft.
THE HOMICIDE
Gwinn was found bleeding from a gunshot wound to his throat shortly after 5 AM on 11 June 1988. He was sitting in his 1954 Chevrolet pickup truck; although it was partly over the bank of the Russian River, the truck still partially blocked East Side Calpella Road. Two differing locations separated by about amile are reported as the murder sceneone fewer than 100 yards south of CA Highway 20, the other near the Moore Street junction with East Side Calpella Road. As Gwinn was a Calpella resident, he was near home.
Rescue workers--firefighters and EMTs--responding to a report of a traffic accident found Gwinn still alive. However, he died in the Ukiah hospital at 6:07 AM.
Gwinn was a trucker. With his past record, and the discovery of narcotics paraphernalia in the pickup truck, LE posits the killing may have stemmed from trading in drugs.
LE did garner a description of a suspect. A man 6 feet 1 or 2 inches tall, about 40 years of age, with moderate length dark hair and a beard, was seen walking north on East Side Calpella Road.
