Kevin Neil Daniels
Date of birth: 9 April 1953
Place of birth: Santa Rosa, Sonoma County, CA
Education: High school graduate
Kevin lived in Hopland, Mendocino County CA until age 7; his family then moved to Fortuna in Humboldt County. Kevin graduated from Fortuna Union High School. He then went to work for Louisiana Pacific in their Big Lagoon CA and Samoa CA lumber mills before transferring to their mill in Covelo CA.
A fire call in Covelo at 1220 AM on Saturday 21 January 1989 disclosed that Kevin lay dead in his mobile home. He showed injuries that seemed inconsistent with death by fire. He was not suspected of drug trafficking, although Covelo is well known for its illegal pot plantations and marijuana trafficking. In fact, the Mendocino County Sheriff's Office professed it had no suspects in the homicide. Kevin was popular in the community, and the investigators could find no enemies to investigate.
By March 1989, the coroner's report said Kevin had actually died of carbon monoxide poisoning. A $1,000 reward was posted for info leading to the arrest and conviction of the killer because widespread interviews had failed to find leads. On 13 July 1989, the reward amount was bumped to $12,500.
By late 1992, a Sheriff's investigator disclosed that Kevin had been shot to death before the fire. The deputy also discovered that Kevin had testified in a Humboldt County Court against Randall David Creekmore in the early 1980s. Creekmore threatened Kevin after the trial. For this reason Creekmore is considered a POI in this case.
