Hamilton Cold Case: Disappearance of Sheryl Sheppard focus of CBC investigation

Sheryl Sheppard was 29 years old when she disappeared roughly around January 2, 1998. She had been to a New Year's Eve party on December 31, 1997 with her boyfriend Michael Lavoie, and at that party, Michael had proposed to her and she said yes.

That was one of the last times people saw her. Some people spoke to her on the phone after that, including her mother Odette Fisher, the next day.

And then some time between January 1 and 2, she disappeared, and has never been seen. No remains or trace of Sheryl has ever been found.

Lavoie, who was allegedly the last person to see her, claims that he dropped Sheryl off at a hotel in Niagara Falls, on the evening of Jan. 2, Friday night.

He left her there and then never saw her again. He claims that it was a hotel that she would be exotic dancing.

So there are many claims and counter-claims about whether Sheryl was ever there dancing or not, whether the story had any credibility or not, and so we're investigating the entirety of the case, looking into all the different aspects of it, including Michael Lavoie's story.

Michael was named, or implied, as a prime suspect in the case by Hamilton police and certainly in the media, there's been a number of aspects of his behaviour and things that he's done or not done with regards to Sheryl's case that have brought these allegations in his direction.

There's a lot of people who knew Sheryl that are interested in finding justice, that have come forward and are speaking to us.

We've spoken to police and former police, and we've tried our best to speak to everyone involved in the case thus far. It's an ongoing investigation. The podcast is a live investigative process, so we're not finished yet.

My heart goes out to her poor, dear mother. The BF looks very, very good for this. Anyone know what happened to him? Hope they nail the *advertiser censored* that did this.

[h=1]Hamilton Cold Case: Sheryl Sheppard disappears and there's a clear suspect[/h]
[h=3]Episode 2 of CBC's true-crime Podcast Someone Knows Something comes Monday[/h] By Mahnoor Yawar, CBC News Posted: Nov 27, 2016
Ridgen says after the Season 2 premiere, aired, a number of listeners in the Hamilton area reached out to him with tips and relevant information that may move the investigation forward.
Many questions have arisen in the years after Sheppard's disappearance, and many point at Sheppard's fiancé, Michael Lavoie, who may have been the last to see her.
Lavoie told Sheryl's mother Odette Fisher and the police that he had dropped Sheppard off at the Concord Hotel in Niagara Falls for a dancing gig on January 2, 1998, although the owner of the establishment disputes that statement.
"In this second episode, we visit the storage locker where police discovered Michael Lavoie parked inside Sheryl's car, alone, overcome by exhaust fumes," says Ridgen, describing the days following Sheppard's disappearance.

One of the questions that the episode will explore, in particular, is one that has plagued the case since it captured the media's attention almost two decades ago: if the case against Lavoie was as strong as it appeared at the time, then why wasn't he charged?

Episode 4: Intimation

In Episode 4: Intimation, David Ridgen visits 851 Queenston to see the apartment where Odette, Sheryl and Michael lived.

Perhaps some clue might be discovered in Unit 701 nearly 19 years after Sheryl's disappearance.

Seeing the apartment helps to build a narrative of what could have happened.

And, more concretely, it helps to track down neighbours and staff who might've been unwitting witnesses during those early days in January 1998.

"As we go through the series, we get closer and closer to the people who knew them best," said David Ridgen, host of Someone Knows Something.

This week on the CBC Radio true crime podcast, the team unravels another piece of the mystery by introducing listeners to Sheila Darbyson, who was romantically involved with Michael Lavoie shortly after Sheryl Sheppard disappeared.

Darbyson "explains what her thoughts are on Lavoie's behaviour at the time and we also learn what she claims she witnessed," said Ridgen.

Episode 6: Stepbrother

http://www.cbc.ca/radio/sks/season2/episode-6-stepbrother-1.3916769

David tracks down Michael Lavoie's stepbrother, Mark Dempsey, and talks to him about family, betrayal and the criminal code.

'I need to put her to rest': 19 years later mom still searches for Sheryl Sheppard

New Year's Eve isn't a festive time for Odette Fisher. When midnight strikes, and the calendar page turns, she'll just think about her missing daughter.

Fisher's daughter is Sheryl Sheppard, a Hamilton woman who went missing 19 years ago, sometime between Jan. 1 and 2. New Year's Day 1998 is the last time they spoke.

"She was my body guard," Fisher said. "I didn't call her Sheryl. I called her my body guard."

"She was going to take care of me. She always said, 'When Mom gets older, I'm going to take care of her.'"

Fisher said her main goal is to find her daughter's remains so she can find closure. She wants a physical space to visit to grieve, something more concrete than the candle burning in her house on New Year's Day.

"I'm 70-years-old," she said. "I'm not … While I'm alive, I just want to know. I want an answer. I want to find her remains. I need to put her to rest."

"It's painful not knowing what happened to her."

Sheppard's disappearance is the subject of season two of the CBC podcast Someone Knows Something. Each episode is created fresh with new information the crew gets every week. Host Dave Ridgen says they're getting somewhere.

"The podcast has been successful in bringing other people forward," said Ridgen, whose next episode airs Monday.

"Every interview we do, we get new information."

Episode 7: Ghost

Sheryl's disappearance has also haunted her relatives and wide ranging circle of friends, including a woman named Gwen.

Gwen is the mother of Michael Lavoie's daughters — three girls who were with Michael the weekend that Sheryl went missing.

After Sheryl disappeared, Gwen moved with her children out of Ontario. Why? And does she or her children know anything that might help the investigation?

In Episode 7, David speaks with Dan Nolan, a Hamilton Spectator journalist who, while reporting the story of Sheryl's disappearance with Odette back in 1998, had an intriguing run-in with Michael Lavoie. One that was never reported in the media.

Dan took notes and tells David what he heard.

Episode 8: Gwen

http://www.cbc.ca/radio/sks/season2/episode-8-gwen-1.3934729

Gwen was devastated by Sheryl's disappearance and the fact that Michael Lavoie was the prime suspect. Gwen is Lavoie's former partner and the mother of the three children they had together.

Gwen's children knew Sheryl well and liked her. They were also with Lavoie during the weekend that Sheryl disappeared.

During that time, their father Michael reportedly exhibited some strange behaviour. That behaviour became even more troubling in the days after the daughters were returned to their mother Gwen on Sunday, January 5.

In Episode 7: Ghost, David Ridgen travelled across the country to contact Gwen and see if she would speak about Sheryl's case.

This week, we hear from Gwen about her life with Michael Lavoie, what she's heard from her daughters, and what she thinks may have happened in January 1998.

Episode 9: The Appearance of Force

http://www.cbc.ca/radio/sks/season2/episode-9-the-appearance-of-force-1.3944639

On December 31, 1997, Michael Lavoie proposed to Sheryl Sheppard on live television during a special New Year's Eve broadcast.

The moment was witnessed by many attendees and TV viewers—and constantly replayed once Sheryl's disappearance made the news.

But one of the closest observers of the proposal was the host of the show, a DJ named Mike Richards.

Will rewatching the video refresh his memories of a surreal night 19 years earlier?

David also has the proposal video analyzed by Stephen Porter, a forensic psychologist who specializes in behavioral analysis of microexpressions.

David also speaks with Kara Branton, the niece of Pam Branton (who we met in Episode 3: Blondie) and daughter of Pam's twin sister Paula, who was one of Sheryl's closest friends.

And we hear from Gerald Davidson, who lived at 851 Queeston Rd. just a few floors below the apartment Sheryl, Michael and Odette shared in 1997.

Davidson is the neighbour who may have witnessed Michael Lavoie in the parking garage carrying two large garbage bags.

What was in those garbage bags?

Someone Knows Something S2 is great! I never heard of this case before the podcast. Sheryl sounds like she was such a kind person.I feel so bad for Sheryl's mother.

This week's show also reveals that two separate sources say Michael Lavoie may have been blackmailing Sheppard with a compromising video tape

David attempts to speak with Brian Sweeney, Sheryl's ex-husband, whose name continues to come up during interviews.
Brian might have information that could help further the investigation, so it's important we hear from him

On this week's podcast, several witnesses including Sheppard's sister, aunt and a friend reveal for the first time that she might have known that her life was in danger — in one instance even saying, "Don't be surprised if I go missing."

saying something like that does not mean her life was in danger,

in my opinion it more likely means she went missing on her own,

she might have been saying "goodbye" to these people with actually saying "goodbye", if you know what i mean,

running away or faking her death to start a new life, is more likely IMO

too much coincidence that she said "Don't be surprised if I go missing" and then all of a sudden she DOES goes missing.....hhhhmmmm

.

my other theory is that she had some very "risky adventures" planned in niagara falls, i know that area well and its known for seedy prostitution and stripping/escorting,

maybe she went there with the intentions of meeting a "pimp" which she knew in advance would be dangerous (hence her warning) and obviously did not tell anybody about it, and just got caught up in "the wrong crowd"

IMO her boyfriend had nothing to do with this....i believe his story 100%

.

Episode 12: Lavoie

http://www.cbc.ca/radio/sks/season2/episode-12-lavoie-1.3972261

Nineteen years ago, Michael Lavoie said that he had nothing to do with the disappearance of his fiancé, Sheryl Sheppard.

But that's about all he's said.

Despite being the prime suspect in Sheryl's disappearance according to Hamilton police, Michael's spent less than 30 minutes being interviewed.

And the media hasn't had much more luck. Michael's declined comment whenever asked, according to reports.

There are many questions that need answering, it's time to track down the man who might be able to shed some light on them: Michael Lavoie.
