Annette Mason cold case: New inquest into murder of Toowoomba teenager

'The family of murdered Toowoomba teenager Annette Mason is hopeful the reopening of an inquest into her death will lead to the conviction of her killer.

Queensland Attorney-General Yvette D'Ath announced on Monday there would be another inquest, after months of petitioning by the Mason family and supporters.

The 15-year-old's partly naked body was found bludgeoned to death in the bedroom of her Anzac Avenue home in November 1989.

She was murdered after a night out sneaking into pubs and was last seen alive that morning at about 3:30am when she arrived home in a taxi.

It was her first week living out of home and she had been share-housing with other women.

No-one was ever charged and an inquest in 1991 found there was insufficient evidence to find anyone responsible, despite hearing from 25 witnesses.'

I find it amazing that police have been so fixated on their preferred perp, that this has been allowed to drag on for 27 years!

The inquest will hopefully make a decision based on ALL the reports made over the years! Crimestoppers reports have been simply ignored

About time! Let's hope this leads to a conviction. Way overdue. I think in this case the police may have May a few blunders over the years. Will be watching how it pans out.

Fresh inquest into Annette Mason murder hoped to bring closure

THE question of who killed Toowoomba teenager Annette Jane Mason almost 30 years ago is hoped to be answered in a fresh inquest launched by the Queensland coroner.

‘Annette’s sister Linda Mason said her ultimate goal was to “see someone charged”.

“It’s a long, hard fight but it will be well worth it to see an ending,” she told reporters.

Annette’s death occurred before the new Coroners Act was introduced in 2003, meaning state coroner Terry Ryan will not have the power to compel a witness to answer questions during the inquest.

Special counsel Leanne McDonald, whose firm Shine Lawyers is representing Annette’s family, said she expected the proceedings to be lengthy. “We need some answers, that’s the end result,” she told AAP. ’

‘An initial inquest in late 1991 could not identify a person responsible for Annette’s death due to insufficient evidence.

Since then there have been numerous coercive hearings held by Queensland’s Corruption and Crime Commission that helped narrow the list of persons of interest.

One of those hearings resulted in a 44-year-old woman being charged with perjury, however prosecution of that charge was eventually unsuccessful. The new inquest is the result of Annette’s family petitioning Attorney-General Yvette D’Ath to put fresh eyes on the case.

It will now return to court for a further hearing on February 26 to determine how the matter will proceed.

Meanwhile, a $250,000 reward remains on offer for anyone with information that could lead to a conviction for Annette’s death.’

Annette Mason inquest to hear from dozens of witnesses
    20th Mar 2018 6:11 AM

THE death of Toowoomba teen Annette Mason will be examined at an inquest starting on July 30.
On Monday, the Coroners Court heard the inquest was expected to take a fortnight and involve about 46 witnesses.
It will establish, among other things, if anybody should be charged for Mason's murder or manslaughter.
The 15-year-old was found dead in a Toowoomba home in November, 1989.
Investigations have continued over the decades but nobody has been charged over her death.
In December, State Coroner Terry Ryan re-opened the inquest. -NewsRegional
