California woman missing, possibly abducted
The so-far unexplained disappearance of a 34-year-old Redding-area woman shocked her family and friends, who said she’s a devoted mother of two who’d never leave her children.
And it’s that same devotion that leads family members to believe Sherri Papini was abducted.

MOUNTAIN GATE, Calif. - Sherri Papini went missing last Wednesday and no one as seen or heard from her since.

Keith Papini, Sherri's husband, believes she was abducted and is asking for her safe return.

"Bring her home, bring her home, just bring her home,” Keith said as tears filled his eyes. “Bring her home safe there is a $50,000 reward just bring her home."

It's been five days since Sherri was last seen wearing a pink jogging jacket off Old Oregon Trail in Mountain Gate, north of Redding.

"It's hard waiting you know, you are waiting for a phone call, you're waiting for something to tell us this is the directions, or this is the house, or this is the car and that is very difficult right now."

On November 2, Keith came home and noticed Sherri's car was there, which is normal, but when he went inside their house it was abnormally quiet.

"And on normal days I would open the door and my family comes, runs and give me a hug," Keith said with a small smile on his face.

This time he was not welcomed with hugs from Sherri and his two children ages two and four.

So he searched their house and their property, but could not find his family.

Keith called their daycare and the children still had not been picked up.

He used the Find my iPhone app to locate Sherri's phone, which was down the street, off Old Oregon Trail and Sunrise.

"That's when I knew she had been taken or abducted, in my opinion," Keith noted.

He called 911 and a search for his wife started.

The sheriff's office does not have enough evidence or information at this time to point to an abduction.

Anthony Bertain, a lieutenant with the Shasta County Sheriff's Office, noted they have received well over 100 tips since last Thursday.

The shocking nature of a young mother's disappearance in Mountain Gate has the Shasta County Sheriff's Office dedicating nearly all its investigators to the case, a lieutenant said today, as well as some Redding Police Department detectives.

Sherri Papini, 34, has been missing since she went for a jog Wednesday afternoon in the Mountain Gate area near Sunrise Drive.

Lt. Anthony Bertain said that, while all missing persons cases are important, the particularly suspicious nature of Papini's disappearance has his office dedicating just about every employee it can to the case, including some from the police department.

"We have worked all weekend; we have our entire major crimes unit, just about, dedicated inbetween some of the other cases that we've got," he said. "Just based on the way the circumstances of this investigation kicked off, we're handling this still as a missing person at risk. There is some urgency of trying to find Sherri Papini and return her to her family."

"Sheila said Sherri was training for an upcoming race where participants dress in superhero clothes and run to raise money for disadvantaged children.

"She is a bright, bubbly, intelligent, beautiful and loving mother," Sheila told Dateline.

Authorities continue to follow up on leads and, in a Shasta County News Release, labeled Sherri's disappearance as "suspicious circumstances/at risk.""

Family Believes Sherry Papini in Another Area By Now

"I think we exhausted the resources that we have out here to search for her," said Sheila Koester, Papini's sister. "We are trying to reach out to national news and social media networks ... We feel that it's moved to where she's been taken from this area, and everyone in the nation needs to be looking."

The family believes she was abducted. The Sheriff's Office noted they do not have information or evidence that points to an abduction, but they are not ruling it out.

"I know she is screaming for me right now but I don't know where you are," Kieth said as tears filled his eyes.

Sandra Oswald has headed the volunteer search group over the last few days.

“No one wants to be searching five days out. We wanted her home days ago," she noted.

The searchers were combing through the area off Old Oregon Trail where Sherri's phone was found. On Monday they decided to put their search on hold.

"[We are] just trying to regroup and take everything in over the last three days of our search and figure out what we want to do for the rest of the week. We are all pretty worn out, pretty tired but that doesn't deter us," Oswald explained.

Lieutenant Anthony Bertain with the sheriff's office said they also temporarily suspended their ground search.

"Our resources would be better directed to managing tips, following up on the leads and the information we got from the search on Thursday," he said.

News coverage of the ransom offered, which is said to be wholly independent of the family:
Cameron Gamble of Redding, who called himself a kidnap and ransom consultant, said he wants to help find Papini.

“We are offering this reward with no strings attached. We have not been talking with the police on this. We’re acting independent from the family as well,” Gamble said.

The person offering the reward does not live in the area and did not want to be named, Gamble said.

He did not write the letter and did not set up the website, Gamble said.

Missing California Mom 'Very Emotional' to Be Found, Hear Husband's Voice, Sheriff Says

Papini was rescued on the side of a highway on Thanksgiving after she disappeared 22 days before, police said.
Papini had been left on the side of road only a short amount of time before someone found her, Bosenko said.
"Evidently, one of the captors had dropped her off on a rural road near Interstate 5 and an interchange," he said. "She was able to flag down a motorist and that motorist summoned emergency assistance from the highway patrol then medical [responders] as well."
Authorities identified the suspected abductors as two women in a dark vehicle.

On a Facebook page created to help find the 34-year-old mother of two, who mysteriously vanished while jogging three weeks ago, Alison Sutton wrote:”

“I couldn’t stop in time to help you this morning but I did pull over and report to police that I saw you by the road and was certain you needed help. I am thankful that someone else was able to pull over safely to help you and that you are safe. God bless you and your family.”
