On the day she beat her grandson into a coma, a Fort Duchesne woman began the morning by taping the 4-year-old's eyes and mouth shut with clear surgical tape and made him stand in the corner, prosecutors allege.
They say the punishment of Jose Rodriguez went on for hours. The boy's 8-year-old half-sister told investigators that she saw the tape on the boy when she left for school and wondered why it was still there when she returned home in the afternoon.
And when grandmother Charlissa Sireech began hitting and punching Jose, the girl said, she went into her bedroom because she was scared and didn't want to watch what was happening. The day, Aug. 30, 2004, ended at a hospital with Jose in a coma and his 3-year-old brother, Emilio, suffering from a severe head injury.

Where were the parents????

That is a good question Paradise, and made me curious. Did some searching and came up with some additional articles:

This article gives a lot of the history of this heartbreaking family.

I found nothing about the parents. It seems that the children were living with their paternal grandmother, but were removed due to the Indian Child Welfare Act and were placed in the maternal grandmother's home. Grandmother's live in boyfriend was also convicted for abusing the children. Apparently what made the grandmother beat the kids, was because they did not speak English, they only spoke Spanish. They had only been with the maternal grandmother for 3 weeks. Additionally it seems that Sireech has a history of child endangerment and alcohol abuse. The children have now been returned to the paternal grandmother's home.

It just makes me cry that they were taken from a loving home with one set of grandparents and sent to live with a grandmother who hated them because they were Mexican.

A member of the Northern Ute Tribe of Utah faces life in prison after pleading guilty on Thursday to abuse of her two young grandsons.

Charlissa Sireech, 45, admitted to seven felony counts of assault against Jose Rodriguez, 4, and his brother, 3-year-old Emilio Rodriguez. She beat Jose so badly that he ended up in a coma. He suffered brain injuries and can only get around in a wheelchair with assistance.

The boys and their sister, who was not abused, have since been sent back to their paternal grandparents in California.

The abuse took place in front of Sireech's boyfriend, Michael DeHerrera, who was charged in state court for failing to report the abuse and sentenced up to 15 years in prison last January.

Note: Utah gives almost no offender information. The only thing I could verify is that Michael DeHerrera is still in custody.

great so the guy who failed to report it is still in prison, but grandma might not?

maybe we're lucky and she just rotted to death in prison?

No, Grandma is in until 2022. Federal has no parole. I just don't have an end date for the guy.

January 2013:

Charlissa Sireech died Jan. 20 at Federal Medical Center Carswell near Fort Worth, Texas, according to Bureau of Prisons spokesman Chris Burke. She was 53 and had a history of health problems that predated her incarceration....

In August 2004, Sireech was awarded custody of three of her grandchildren after the Indian Child Welfare Act coordinator for the Ute Indian Tribe convinced a California judge to turn the children over to the tribe....

They were brought to the Uintah-Ouray Indian Reservation and placed with Sireech, who had a documented history of violence and alcohol abuse....

Jose Rodriguez was not expected to live initially but regained consciousness. He is partially paralyzed and suffered permanent brain damage. All three children are plagued by "anxiety, mental distress, fear, pain, suffering and apprehension," according to a $50 million lawsuit filed by their paternal grandparents against the federal government, the Ute Tribe and Grant.

The lawsuit was settled for $1 million.
