Mark Maples
At 7:13 pm on 13 July 2012, the Mendocino County Sheriff's Office received a call reporting an assault in the 6600 block of Third Gate Road, Brooktrails CA. Deputies and emergency medical personnel responded. While transiting Sherwood Road, en route to the reported attack, they found a pickup truck parked on the roadside with the victim in the bed. Mark Maples of Ukiah, age 53, was pronounced dead by the roadside.
Investigation of the crime scene discovered about 1,000 marijuana plants in an illicit plantation. Mark's girlfriend had returned home to find Mark severely beaten about the head. She called for a friend to aid her in lifting Mark into the bed of the pickup truck, so she could transport him to hospital.
No money or marijuana are known to have been taken during the robbery and homicide.
