Darrel was reported last seen on April 1, 1973, his father died just 3 days later at the age of 57.
This link has information and pictures of Darrel and his family. Although I believe the date of death is incorrect. It says Darrel died April 4, 1973 at age 19 but this is the date of death for his father. FamilySearch.org

NOTE: It seems the family many have had a predisposition to heart problems.

Possibly the reason for Joseph’s death.

Though I would add a link to a newspaper post for information on Darrel B. Nichols.

*** His name is listed as Darryl Nichols in the article.

Note: The article has a little better description of what Darrel was wearing at the time he disappeared. He is described as 19 years old, medium sized, and when last seen was wearing a blue parka, levis and boots. He wears his brown hair cut short, and wears glasses.

And yet, there's no mention about Darrel disappearance. I wonder if the date is correct... May it be an approximation? Maybe he disappeared after his father's death and LE used that date as a reference.
I read Darrel may have gone into the hills with his friends. Where are the friends' statements? May Darrel have had a heart attack or something similar?

Very good points. I read that he went with friends as well. Plus, heart problems certainly ran in the family and he could have had a heart problem while out with his friends and they didn’t know what to do. You’ve got me to thinking on this a little more. I haven’t researched this extensively, but think I’ll see if I can find out a little bit more. I’m curious now who reported him missing, the friends or his family. Also, like you said are their statements from the friends?
