CORINTH, Miss. (AP) — The Alcorn County Sheriff's Department is investigating the discovery of partial human remains at a residence near Kossuth.

The Daily Corinthian (http://bit.ly/2iRRsgl) reports that the sheriff's department received a call Wednesday when a dog brought human remains into a yard.

Sheriff Ben Caldwell says additional searches, including one with cadaver dogs, found no other remains.

The remains were turned over to the coroner and are to be examined at the state crime lab. The sheriff says investigators hope the lab will be able to determine the identity and cause of death.
Caldwell says investigators are examining all possibilities, including missing person cases.

“We don’t know if it’s male, female, young, old,” said Caldwell. “We don’t know for sure if it was foul play or natural causes. We’re hoping that once we get results from the crime lab, we may be able to determine identity and cause of death.”

With the only certainty being that the remains are human, investigators are looking at all possibilities, including missing persons cases.

Thanks, Folie! I looked and could not find any threads of missing people near these remains, but this may be a very old case or a case without a missing thread here.

It was a while back ... May have been closer to Tupelo at the MS/TN state line ...

The previously discovered remains, believed to be from the same individual, are in the hands of the crime lab for analysis. The same will happen with the newly discovered remains.

“We still at this time do not know the identity, age, race or sex of the remains,” said Caldwell. “We’re hoping we get some things where we can identify who it is and the cause of death.”

The remains were on top of the ground and, by appearance, are not recent, he said.

DNA results from the Mississippi Crime Lab have identified the skeletal remains found in a wooded area on County Road 510 early this year as Ellen Teressa Coughlin.

Sheriff Ben Caldwell said she was a white female, 39 years old, and was reported missing by a family member on Oct. 16, 2016. The last known contact with her was in August 2016.

The death is being investigated as a homicide.

RIP Ellen.

I hope there is justice for you.
