Todd Kendhammer told authorities he was driving north on Hwy. M in the town of Hamilton between 7:30 and 8:30 a.m. Sept. 16 when a pipe that fell from a passing truck impaled the passenger side of his windshield, striking his wife, Barbara Kendhammer...

Authorities found the couple’s damaged Toyota Camry on nearby Bergum Coulee Road, a dead-end road seven miles from the couple’s home at N6617 E. Scotch Coulee Road. Todd Kendhammer, who was not injured, had removed the pipe from the windshield and his wife was unresponsive...

Barbara Kendhammer died the next day at Gundersen Health System. She was 46.

Three months after a West Salem woman died from what was believed to be a freak accident, her husband is now charged with killing her...

According to Tim Gruenke, the La Crosse County district attorney, there were a number of red flags that prompted further investigation by the La Crosse County Sheriff's department and other agencies.

"The windshield appears to have been struck more than one time," he said. "The complaint talks about the autopsy and how injuries weren't consistent with a single pipe coming through the windshield."

Todd Kendhammer's homicide trial set for December

A West Salem man charged with killing his wife and trying to cover up the crime by staging a traffic crash will be tried for her death late this year.

Todd Kendhammer’s trial was set Thursday for Dec. 4-15 in La Crosse County Circuit Court.

Prosecutors charged Kendhammer, 46, with first-degree intentional homicide in the Sept. 17 death of his wife, Barbara. He stood mute to the charge and is free on a $250,000 cash bond.

About 50 potential jurors screened in questionnaires indicated they believe Kendhammer is guilty or probably guilty.

Seeking an out-of-county jury would likely delay Kendhammer’s 10-day first-degree intentional homicide trial set to begin Dec. 4 in La Crosse County Circuit Court.

A husband on trial: Todd Kendhammer homicide trial begins Monday

Prosecutors contend Todd Kendhammer fatally beat his wife of 25 years and tried to conceal her death by staging a freak car accident. Kendhammer says she died when an airborne pipe pierced his windshield and struck her in the head.

The West Salem man’s 10-day trial for the intentional death of his wife last year opens Monday in La Crosse County Circuit Court, when attorneys will narrow a pool of potential jurors to 12, plus at least one alternate, to decide the case.

Opening statements begin Tuesday in Todd Kendhammer’s trial for first-degree intentional homicide in the 2016 death of his wife after attorneys spent all day Monday selecting a jury to decide the case.

Attorneys narrowed a pool of potential jurors to a panel of 11 women and four men, including three alternates, for the 10-day trial in La Crosse County Circuit Court.

This is happening in my town. I actually went to HS with Todd and his wife worked at my daughter’s middle school. So sad. There will be no winners regardless of the outcome. All the evidence appears he’s guilty. His family adamantly supports him and sat behind him all day yesterday during jury selection.

Day 6: Todd Kendhammer's defense begins with expert witnesses

A defense witness testified Monday that a windshield fracture pattern is consistent with Todd Kendhammer’s account of a crash he said killed his wife last year.

But a second defense expert told jurors he doesn’t believe a pipe fell from an oncoming truck and went through the glass.

The defense opened its case Monday in La Crosse County Circuit Court in the second week of Kendhammer’s first-degree intentional homicide trial in the death of his wife, Barb.

Kendhammer will testify Tuesday as the third witness in the defense case.
