The 73-year-old has Alzheimer's and was likely to be confused and disoriented.

Searches of bush areas around Lonely Track Rd, East Coast Rd and Glenvar Rd would continue on Thursday evening.

Members of the Police National Dive Squad searched around 10 waterways and ponds in the area to no avail.

The North Shore police said a survival expert had been consulted.

"There is still hope, and we need everyone in the Torbay, Browns Bay and Long Bay areas to continue to check their properties.

Wearn was described as wearing light blue 3/4 length pants with a patterned top and sandals at the time of her disappearance. She also wears a lanyard around her neck that has her name engraved on it.

Pat Wearn's son Andy called on North Shore residents to "check and re-check" their properties and businesses for his missing mother.

search and rescue medic Dr Sara Gordon said Wearn could be curled up and hidden from view.

"She may be critically unwell and we are extremely concerned for her wellbeing," Gordon said.

"Pat is likely to be very dehydrated and therefore more confused and disoriented than usual ... She will be exhausted and may have found herself in a place that she is unable to get out of, such as a property with a gate, under any shelter or in the bush."

People who live in the area were urged to check their properties for anywhere that a person would be able to seek shelter - such as bushes, sheds and even dog kennels.

"She may not respond to voice or her name, so please physically check any area on your property where she may be curled up."

Closure isn't a word that the Wearn family believe in, but they have found comfort in their faith and the support of the community.

A year has passed since 73-year-old Patricia Wearn, known as Pat, disappeared without a trace from her Caversham Dr home in Torbay, Auckland.

It was 12.30pm on January 16, 2017 when the wife, mother and grandmother set off on her daily walk and never returned.

On Tuesday evening a vigil was held in her memory. Pat's friends and members of the community who helped search for her gathered to share recollections and pay their respects.
