Victim, suspect in West Liberty school shooting are
students

The Champaign County prosecuting attorney said there is an active, ongoing investigation and at this time there is very limited information in what can be provided.

Other than one victim, the students are safe and the building has been secured.

He said the family has been notified and the student is receiving treatment. The condition of the student has not been released.

The initial call of shots fired came in at 7:36 a.m. A suspect is in custody.

At 3:30 p.m. this afternoon, the sheriff’s office will provide an update.

Waiting for info to come out in MSM before bringing it here. It's now out that a janitor took down the shooter.

Floyd said he heard the school staff did an excellent job to keep students safe, and that the community is sharing details that a school janitor was the first to tackle the shooter.

Confirmed weapon was a shotgun. More on that soon hopefully.

Sheriff Melvin said the school officials played a large role in neutralizing the threat and having the suspect pinned on the ground prior to law enforcement arriving.

The weapon used was a shotgun, Melvin said.

16 year old Logan Cole is in critical, but stable condition. LE says random shooting and more could've been hurt if shooter hadn't been taken down quickly.

Melvin said that Cole was a random victim and he believes the suspect wanted to do more harm.

Melvin said the victim, a junior, 16, was shot multiple times.

West Liberty-Salem Superintendent Kraig Hissong says students and teachers used the ALICE (Alert, Lockdown, Inform, Counter, Evacuate) method to evacuate the school. Hissong said all students and staff did a good job of following the method to get out safely.

Hissong said staff and students used desks, brooms and other items to block the doors, before evacuating through windows.

Also in this article if you scroll down to third video, a student's cell phone vid of kids escaping through windows and running out on 68.

More than one victim.

Ely Ray Serna, 17, was taken into custody Friday after the shooting, which left one student in critical condition and caused minor injuries to another victim. Serna will face 13 charges that include attempted murder, felonious assault, improperly discharging a firearm, inducing panic and bringing a deadly weapon into a school safety zone.

The suspect was a good student, on the wrestling team, without any serious disciplinary record, and was popular and well-liked.

A real mystery here. What was the motive? I'll bet we are dealing with another bad reaction to anti-depressant type drugs.

I haven't heard anything about medications the shooter might've been taking. It was a somber mood in church today. Our minister's son was in the room across the hall from the bathroom where the shooting took place. The 911 dispatcher is a member of our church and many at our church are familiar with some of the shooter's family.

Our minister's son said as soon as the kids got a safe distance from the school, they started praying for their brothers and sisters still in the school. The whole community is still shook up.

Here is my profile of the school shooter types:

--the 'uniform' of all black/camoflage/trenchcoat look on the part of the shooter

--previous history of mental health 'treatment' of the perp

--reported multiple suspects besides the named patsy

--lack of any believable motive for the shooters' acts

--investigation taken over by the Feds, as represented by the FBI or ATF

--previous ties to the military by the shooter

--attempt by the politicians to impose new laws in the wake of the shooting

--extra guns and ammo found in the auto and at the home of the shooter

--strange expressionless look on the shooter's face during the rampage, or an inability to remember the act afterwards, which I see as an indication of mind control

--early start time to the massacre, so the story will dominate the day's headlines

--a drill mimicking the shooting happening nearby or in recent memory

They have the same drugs in Europe. So why not continuous issues there?

Please keep us updated! This is so sad, but at the same time, I can't help but think how much worse it could have been.
I am real curious why this guy decided to ruin his life.

Ely Serna’s request to return his attempted murder case to juvenile court was rejected Wednesday as Champaign County Common Pleas Court Judge Nick Selvaggio noted he does not have jurisdiction to make such a decision.

Serna, now 18, continues to face 13 felony charges as an adult for a Jan. 20 shooting at West Liberty-Salem High School.

Judge Selvaggio set the trial to start April 10 and to last two weeks.

Teen accused in school shooting seeks to throw out confession

Attorneys for Ely Serna, the teenager charged in last year’s school shooting at West Liberty-Salem High School, argued Tuesday that the confession Serna gave to a detective that day shouldn’t be allowed as evidence at trial because he didn’t understand his rights when he gave it.

Champaign County Common Pleas Court Judge Nick Selvaggio said he would issue a written ruling later, but the nearly four hours of testimony provided the first real glimpse into the mindset of Serna and of the emotional turmoil he had apparently been feeling leading up to the shooting.

Psychiatrist Dr. Peter J. Geier testified that Serna has diagnosed severe depression, anxiety, suicidal tendencies and the eating disorder, bulimia nervosa. Forensic psychologist Daniel L. Davis testified that Serna, who was a 17-year-old senior at the school at the time of the shooting but is 18 now, felt isolated, inferior, hopeless and helpless.

Champaign County Common Pleas Court Judge Nick Selvaggio set sentencing for May 2. Serna faces up to 23 1/2 years in prison.
