Jurors in the Douglas Garland triple-murder trial are expected to be shown, on Monday, aerial photos which the Crown will argue reveal the bodies of the three victims on his farm.

Expert in blood pattern analysis to testify in triple-murder trial of Douglas Garland
February 8, 2017 By Nancy Hixt

A police blood spatter expert will give evidence on Day 16 of the triple-murder trial of Douglas Garland.

Officers who tracked Garland’s movements prior to his arrest for murder are also expected to testify Wednesday.

Court previously heard DNA of Nathan and his grandparents was found throughout the Airdrie farm.

Forsensic lab specialist Vivian Mohrbutter said DNA belonging to both Nathan and his grandfather was found on a hacksaw, seized from one of the Garland outbuildings.

A spare blade for the saw also had DNA of Alvin, the expert said.

Thanks for the new thread Coldpizza - and thanks especially for the timing of all the new trial threads. I really appreciate the way you've timed them to start at the beginning of a new trial day (rather than in the middle). I know you are planning this. :)

deugirtni, this was to be my reply to the pic of the aerial map that you posted at the end of thread #5.

Yesterday an observant websleuth member wrote an excellent rational of why the aerial map may be the same one shown to the jury from July 1st, but be darned if I can find that post. Going by memory some of those reasons were:
The blurry, different pixelated area is where the bodies were erased by photoshop.
People standing in the streets in the Airdrie townsite, July 1st Canada Day parade?
April, 2015 edit date followed the discovery date mentioned in court.
Aerial distance seemed about right.
The July 1st date matches. What would be the odds of two mapping companies flying over Airdrie on the same day.

Yes thank you! I did just have a minor panic attack when the reply button was gone and it took me few seconds to realize "oh the thread is closed!"

Yes, your right – it was mentioned by the poster yesterday that you could see the crowd gathering for Canada Day Parade/Celebrations in the town itself.

The company is Atlis Geomatics and we heard yesterday that they are the ones who hired and contracted Peregrine to take the aerial photos on July 1 and July 2[SUP]nd[/SUP].
When you go to the page, where you can download this aerial it does say specifically that it was flown July 1 2014, and image with 10cm resolution.

When you click on the actual link to download it shows date created 04/20/15

I also think it is the right photo, especially with the shadowy figure outside Outbuilding 3, and I had wondered about the grassy area - it does look blurred to me, and inside the one blur it appears like there is a blue-ish something or other there under the blur.

Regarding him using the barbell. Maybe Alvin or Kathy grabbed a barbell that was near them and then they fought over it. There were batbells in quite a few places right? I don't even know if they had time to grab something to attempt to protect themselves. Just running through scenarios of why he used the barbells. He would not have known something like that was there. That part doesn't match his meticulous planning.

That is kind of creepy if they just blurred out the bodies and put the picture back up. But I suppose a lot of money was spent on that project and it would all be for nothing if they couldn't use those pictures.

We'd be all muddled up if a thread change happened mid-day while we are doing the live Twitter feed coverage. I know I'd get messed up for sure - the coverage moves so fast sometimes (well - not yesterday so much).

Thank you Hatfield for your assistance, I finally found the property on the large file from the earlier post that required software to view it. I am posting 2 screenshots, one of the entire property, and one close-up of the area of the south buildings (where the bodies were purportedly seen on July 1st). It starts to get pretty blurry when it gets closer. I believe this shot is from July 2nd, but not sure?

Thanks for posting these!

I'm sure that the victims would have been easy to identify with this resolution. It's interesting that the grass around the small sheds is green on July 1-2, and brown a few days later during the police investigation.

I'm sure there will be aspects of this testimony that will be upsetting as well. I really can't wait to get to the end of this trial, to the verdict and sentencing.

Yes and otherwise someone would have or pay for the redo. It obviously wouldn't be Garland.

What that suggests is it might have a very keen member of the public who noticed the potential evidence when the map first appeared online.

Your eyes must be way better than mine (or your computer)!

Actually ... not exactly. Dangerous offender status can be removed, or lifted.

"Lisa Neve, 26, was designated a dangerous offender in 1994, which meant she could be jailed indefinitely. She became one of only two women in Canada to be labelled a dangerous offender.

But on Thursday Neve walked out of the door of a Saskatchewan jail as a free woman. CBC reporter Cathy Tomlinson spent most of the day with Neve as she prepared for life on the outside. Tomlinson said the former inmate was "ecstatic" but also "in shock" and "nervous" about what to expect.

Chief Justice Catherine Fraser headed a three-member panel that took 15 months to examine Neve's case. Earlier this week the panel said in a statement that it was "not reasonable" for Neve to be ruled a dangerous offender.'"

My post wasn't saying that dangerous offender statuses never get lifted - it was in regards to murderers who are put away for life and the fact that the Canadian justice system doesn't allow for photos of them to be released after they've been incarcerated...not like in the US. Once they're in prison for life - they're basically hidden away from the public eye. I'd be amazed if we ever see a photo of DG again after he's taken to the clink.

Hopefully the blood spatter pattern analysis will provide some insight into where the individuals were attacked - I'm curious whether those areas will correspond with the three 'blood letting' areas.

We still have the unanswered question of why Kathryn and Nathan were in the upstairs spare bedroom at the time of the attack (roughly 3:20AM) when we know that they were asleep on the sofa bed in the basement at 11PM (when Jennifer went home).

It is difficult for me to fathom how this person, who seems diminutive in the photos (imo), was able to get AL into the back of his truck bed.

Blood on the sidewalk leading to the driveway belonged to Kathryn and Nathan. Alvin probably walked.

Farm boy, they look small sometimes but they can lift some pretty crazy stuff!
