One of those cases is that of a white man found buried in a shallow grave in what is now Pleasant Prairie in March 1988. The man is believed to have been strangled to death about three months before his body was discovered, based on the level of decomposition.

He is estimated to be somewhere between 30 and 60 years old, about 180 pounds and 5 feet 6 inches tall. He is believed to have been balding and with a beard.

"The very interesting part of this is his clothing," Hall said. The man was wearing a Hermes sweater that would have retailed at the time of his death at $800 to $900, a shirt from the French fashion designer Ted Lapidus, and underwear labeled Saks Fifth Avenue.

I found a website with the listings of Saks stores and when/where they opened but didn't find a missing person matching description during that time frame. Going to try some International searches and see if I get anything there. His clothing should make this solvable.

there's an update with a press conference tomorrow morning at 10am CST:

After more than three decades, a homicide victim's identity is discovered
Link not available to open in Europe, so I'm going to take a chance and post article text here:

"After more than three decades, a homicide victim's identity is discovered

After more than 30 years, a “John Doe” murder victim found on a Kenosha County roadside has a name.

That identity of the 1988 homicide victim will be announced at a news conference Wednesday, according to the Kenosha County Sheriff’s Department.

The 1988 John Doe case is one of 14 cold case homicides on the Kenosha County files, the oldest from 1977, the newest form 2003.

It is one of two of those cases with a victim listed as “John Doe.”

Kenosha County Medical Examiner Patrice Hall has made identifying John Doe victims a focus for her office, encouraging law enforcement and families of missing people to enter data with the federal Unidentified Persons System (NamUs) for Human Identification, and working with the University of North Texas Center for Human Identification to bring updated technology to old cases.

In past interviews, she said the 1988 case was a puzzle.

The man was found in March 1988, buried in a shallow grave in what is now Pleasant Prairie.

A white man, he was believed to have been strangled to death about three months before his decomposing body was found.

“The very interesting part of this is his clothing,” Hall said in a 2017 interview.

While people who go unidentified in death often live on the margins of society, this man was wearing extremely expensive clothing, indicating he was wealthy.

When his body was found, he was wearing a Hermes sweater that would have retailed at the time of his death at $800 to $900, a shirt from the French fashion designer Ted Lapidus, and underwear labeled Saks Fifth Avenue.

The press conference announcing the identity begins at 10 a.m. Wednesday. "

His name is Robert Lyle Schwartz (not sure of spelling of last name). He was involved in "criminal activity." Family never reported him missing, as they figured his lifestyle caught up with him. A suspect in his murder has died. Case is open, but there are sealed grand jury papers. I also heard Robert was suspected to be involved in silver bullion.

I'm only half listening while trying to work. WTMJ4 is carrying the press conference: Kenosha John Doe to be identified after 31 years

*eta, that is correct spelling of last name, a reporter did ask at last minute.

Kenosha John Doe identified, described as conartist by family...

...Schwartz had a long criminal history, including selling silver bullion. Family members described him as a 'con artist.'

Kenosha John Doe identified, described as con artist

Wonder if his killer was someone he tried to put something past and that was the result? Glad his family has some resolution to his disappearance.

‘Strangled at O’Hare:’ Kenosha County officials identify John Doe from 1988 homicide investigation

New fingerprint technology is reported as being the means to ID this man.

What did I miss about new fingerprint technology within the last 2 years?

FBI made new fingerprint technology where they can identify someone even from one partial (decomposed, dried up, incomplete etc) finger print at the scene.

In 2017 FBI have partnered this database with NamUs and due to this collaboration quite a few Doe's have been identifed in last two years. This John Doe is one of them.
