At least four dead and dozens injured after a train smashes into a bus in Mississippi

  • Authorities believe bus was stopped on the tracks but the reasons are unclear
  • Witnesses said bus drove from Austin, Texas, and was full of senior citizens
  • The bus was carrying 50 people from Austin, Texas, Biloxi Police Chief John Miller said at a news conference

'The collision this afternoon occurred at the Main Street crossing. The eastbound mixed freight train, traveling from New Orleans to Mobile, Ala., had three locomotives and 52 cars – 27 loaded cars and 25 empty cars.'
'The crossing has flashing lights and crossing gates. Authorities in Biloxi report three(*4) fatalities and many injuries, and our thoughts are with all involved. The train crew was not injured.'

Dang, they could have evacuated the bus in those 10 minutes until the bus could be moved.

R.I.P. to the victims and a speedy recovery to all those who are injured.

So sad. My parents do these bus rides to casinos all the time and it's one of my worst fears. Prayers to all involved.

Sadly, that was enough time for the driver to get the passengers off the bus. IIRC, that's the law. Sadly, many of these bus companies are hiring incompetent drivers because they'll work for very low wages and no benefits.

It's a shame the states won't do anything to regulate the bus industry. Maybe it's time for the federal government to regulate them again.

"Jim DeLaCruz, a passenger who was in the back of the bus with his wife, told the Sun Herald that they were trying to get off. “The bus tried to clear the tracks and got stuck right in the middle and it couldn’t budge, and the train just kept coming and kept coming,” he said."

"Witnesses told the Sun Herald of Biloxi that the bus was stuck on the tracks for about five minutes before the train hit. Some people were getting off the bus as the driver tried to move it, and at least one person was shoved under the bus when the train hit, said Mark Robinson, a Biloxi native."

"Robinson told WLOX-TV that people trying to get off were either thrown under the bus or run over by the train and that “body pieces were thrown everywhere.”

"A nearby car was used as a stepladder after the crash to get people off the bus, and emergency workers pulled passengers through windows."
