WARNING: Graphic details at links

Police said Yadira Arroyo, 44, had stopped her ambulance in the Bronx at about 7 p.m. after being alerted that a man was riding on the back bumper of her vehicle. Police had initially reported that a bystander flagged her down to report a robbery.

When she exited the vehicle to investigate, the man jumped inside as Arroyo tried to stop him, police said.

The 44-year-old paramedic killed was a mother of five and a 14-year veteran of the New York Fire Department, de Blasio said. Although he did not identify her, the fire department later said via Twitter that she was Yadira Arroyo.

The hijacker drove over a sidewalk and crashed the ambulance into cars parked along the street. A K-9 officer aided by several civilians seized the man, the mayor said.

The 25-year-old suspect hasn't been identified yet. I excluded one article that contains graphic video. :(

Arroyo’s partner suffered minor injuries while struggling with the suspect, according to police.

In addition to three counts of murder, Gonzalez is charged with grand larceny and operating a motor vehicle while impaired by drugs. He lives down the street from Arroyo, at a building run by Volunteers of America that houses homeless people or those who are cosidered [sic] "at risk." The organization didn't immediately respond to an email request for comment early Friday.

Man charged with killing EMT Yadira Arroyo found unfit for trial

Jose Gonzalez, 25, is charged with murder, manslaughter and robbery for his deadly encounter with EMT Yadira Arroyo last year.

The Bronx District Attorney now has 10 days to either accept the doctor’s finding that Gonzalez is mentally unfit for trial or challenge the decision.

Man charged with killing FDNY EMT Yadira Arroyo thinks insanity defense would set him free in 90 days: psychiatrist

FEB 07, 2019

"The career criminal accused of killing an FDNY emergency medical technician with her own ambulance does not understand the consequences he faces, a forensic psychiatrist testified Thursday.

Defendant Jose Gonzalez, 25, thinks that if he is declared unfit to stand trial for the murder of EMT Yadira Arroyo on a Bronx street, he will get out of jail in 30 or 90 days after a stint in the hospital, the psychiatrist, Melissa Kaye, said.

In fact, she said, a ruling of not guilty by reason of insanity would likely lead to a long stay in a mental hospital for a period of time that would be possibly longer than the time he would serve for a pleaded sentence.

Kaye, in a Bronx courtroom, said Gonzalez has schizoaffective disorder, a combination of bipolar disorder and schizophrenia. And while he “has some factual knowledge of his case," he lacks rational understanding of the proceedings, she said....

...Assistant DA George Suminski laid out the facts that Gonzalez was able to correctly recall during his examinations as proof of his fitness to stand trial, including the names of both Arroyo and her partner, Monique Williams, the current date and the date of his next court appearance.

But Judge Michael Gross called for another fitness exam, which annoyed some of Arroyo’s supporters....

Gonzalez’s next court date is March 14."
