It was all wood?

Another skyscraper caught fire as well. The one that went up under construction . Some slant toward the other one was occupied but notion by today is no-one died?

A huge four-alarm fire broke out in downtown Raleigh, North Carolina, Thursday night.
The fire happened at a building under construction at 400 W. North St., WTVD reports.
Many people took to social media to share dramatic photos and videos of the blaze, which is blanketed downtown Raleigh in smoke and ashes.

The fire chief says an apartment building under construction in North Carolina's capital city had been inspected 50 times, most recently on Monday, before it went up in flames near an entertainment district.

Does this strike you as they are hinting at arson - the way it worded?

ws Glass, debris, and water on the sidewalks and inside apartments made the buildings less accessible, so residents were asked to wear protective clothing and eyewear.

The Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives (ATF) has been called in to help with the investigation into the largest fire the city has seen since the 1920s.

The ATF estimates the total loss of the multi-level building is more than $12 million.

The site was once the location of the Raleigh Trailways bus station.

Do explosions have their own alarm codes, or does the number of alarms referred to have to do with the fire.

Although the outer material was wood, which burns quickly, this was a massive building. I thought at first multiple buildings burned to the ground. Neighboring buildings were damaged. To sustain that level of damage (I know the FD said there was little they could do after arriving at the scene) without a clear point of origin (in ref to pictures), does it suggest an accelerant was used?

LE is likely seeking surveillance footage from surrounding businesses and management of surrounding rentals, especially across the street from the construction. Footage will show anyone entering and leaving the building soon before the fire broke out, and suspicious vehicles in the area.

I cant help but think something was used- that was one heck of inferno.

But then I get stuck on target. Maybe a recently fired employee?

Insurance?

Unfinished apts does not seem like a desired target for more nefarious stuff.

I checked around to see if the owner was having $ issues - did not seem to be.

So in a way it seems like workplace violence might be it ?

Building all wood , apparenlty is called Podium Design . Podium construction is generally poured concrete or block on the bottom two floors with up to five stories of wood-framed building above. The bottom portion is usually for commercial use and the top section is for residential.

The Rising Popularityof Podium DesignIn North America, “podium”buildings, which include multiplestories of wood over an elevatedconcrete “podium deck,” havebecome especially prevalent.

Withever-increasing land costs and therising cost of steel and concrete, developers are turning to wooddesigns that offer greater density anda higher percentage of rentable squarefootage than traditional garden-styleapartments while also being costeffective—bothin terms of materialand labor. Wood’s other benefits, such as speed of construction, designflexibility, and reduced environmental

In a Type III wood building, theIBC requires the use of fire-retardanttreated (FRT) wood for exterior walls. In a Type V building, FRT wood isnot required.

FRT products madeby different manufacturers varyconsiderably

Wood building fires have been happening.

This kind of spectacular, five-alarm wood frame fire seems to be on the increase, ....

recent high profile losses shared the following characteristics:

  • Four or greater stories of 100% wood frame construction materials
  • Podium construction, i.e., one or two ground floors of concrete or non-combustible materials constructed for retail space under residential space
  • Very large individual structures with significant values, under one roof
  • Losses occurred at a late stage of the framing of all floors, but prior to compartmentalization that would have enclosed living units, elevator shafts and stairwells; i.e., the most vulnerable time in the construction timeline for a 100% loss of values in place

Multi-story wood frame projects have been in the news recently, following a string of serious fires on construction sites. In December 2013 there was a massive fire on a $26 million wood frame site in Ontario.

This year a development under construction in San Francisco caught fire, causing a loss that could reach $60 million dollars.

Later, a fire occurred at a similar project in Houston, Texas, then in Rockville, Maryland and in the Ft. Worth, Texas area.

WOOD FRAME CONSTRUCTION DESTROYED YET AGAIN BY FIRE

The construction was in the wood frame stage," Gilbert Fire Department Captain Gary Hildebrandt told the Arizona Republic newspaper. "It's going to be exposed wood, so it's going to burn hotter and faster, and with the winds kicking up, we had a hard time containing it right away."

I wonder if a wood frame construction was also a factor in this apartment building-under-construction fire?

The eight-alarm fire broke out about 3:30 p.m. Monday at the multimillion-dollar CityPlace development in Overland Park, Kansas, sending plumes of smoke and embers toward homes in the suburban neighborhood nearby, The Kansas City Star reported.
[...]
Neighborhood residents described hearing an explosion before debris fell on houses.

"It sounded like a bomb," said Juan Roque.

The cause of the fire was not immediately clear, but a spokesperson said some residents could have smelled gas.

Officials said about 40 fire personnel from the arson task force, Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives and state investigators will come in to inspect the homes and construction that were impacted.

The eight-alarm fire broke out about 3:30 p.m. in a four-story unoccupied apartment building in the CityPlace development at the southeast corner of College Boulevard and Nieman Road confronting firefighters with “tremendous smoke and fire,” said Overland Park Fire Department spokesman Jason Rhodes.

That building was destroyed. An adjoining apartment building under construction also caught fire and was still burning hours later.

Sounds horrible. Hoping the fire is extinguished soon. 3 firefighters were also reported injured, but not seriously. Wishing them a speedy recovery.

This reminded me of the fire in Raleigh, but it appears authorities do suspect arson in the Kansas fire.

There’s symbolism in the location of The Metropolitan fire on Jones Street, a few blocks from the where the state legislature meets. The charred remains and the damage to adjoining buildings ought to spur lawmakers to take a hard look at whether the growth in North Carolina’s urban areas is outpacing safety standards and building codes.

A source close to the investigation said ATF agents, who've been operating out of a mobile command unit since Saturday, are focused on the second floor of the apartment building for a possible origin of the fire.

Eyewitness Eric Debrah took a photo of the Metropolitan Apartments at 10:03 p.m. Thursday, showing where the fire seems to have started in a second-floor unit. By 10:11 p.m., flames had spread to every inch of the construction site.

"Let's take a look at the case in hand ... wood-frame construction is used throughout the country. It's a standard form of construction," Henry said. "You had a guard on duty, you had two fire hydrants and stand pipes there. That's all per code. So, the building was at a very vulnerable stage. It was just bad luck."
