Lee de Paauw, an 18-year-old from Queensland state, was at a hostel in the northern Queensland town of Innisfail around 2:30 a.m. on Sunday when he started bragging that he could swim in the river, a known habitat for aggressive saltwater crocodiles, said Sophie Paterson, a British backpacker who was at the hostel.

Lee is recovering from serious wounds to his arms, but a man's body was recovered from the water. Wildlife officers are hunting the 13-ft crocodile that attacked Lee.

So, there is a romantic twist to the story. De Paauw was trying to impress Sophie and testing a theory.
Lee De Paauw, an 18-year-old Australian, met British backpacker Sophie Paterson at a hostel in northern Queensland over the weekend.

After a few drinks, he boasted to Sophie and her friends that the local saltwater crocodile population was more inclined to take a bite out of tourists than native Aussies. Oh, how wrong he was.

Sophie denies being impressed, but agreed to go on a date with De Paauw.

The crocodile, which was caught in a floating trap, turned out to be 1m longer than initially thought.

The large reptile was taken by the Department of Environment and Heritage Protection yesterday to a Cairns holding facility, before being offered to a crocodile farm or a zoo.

'I did not know there was a crocodile there. I just done it for Sophie,' he said. 'She is beautiful, caring, and kind.'

The foolhardy teenager was lucky to get away with his life, punching the huge reptile in the face after it sunk its jaws into his arm and tried to drown him in a 'death roll'.

The important thing, of course, is it got him a date. :loveyou:

His tone has changed a bit, though, admitting that his stunt was foolish, since Sophie noted that he is too young for her. :shame:
