"The wreckage of the single-engine Cessna aircraft was discovered on Thursday, about 60 kilometres east of Marathon, Ont., near White River. No body was found at the crash site and there were no footprints in the area surrounding the downed plane.

The TSB has confirmed the plane did not touch down at any point after it took off and would not speculate on Monday as to what had occurred."

No body and no signs of egress from the crash site. Sounds like a) SAR did not detect the egress route or b) SAR has not yet found the body, or c) The subject jumped at some point with or without a parachute with the intent that the crash site would be severe enough to make finding a body impossible.

Ontario Provincial Police say the single engine Cessna 172 crashed late Wednesday night about 60 kilometers, or 37 miles, east of Marathon. The OPP was informed of the crash on Thursday, and the crash site was accessed by helicopter.

The OPP says the pilot of the aircraft was not located at the scene of the crash. The plane had been rented in Ann Arbor, Mich., and the University of Michigan Police Department is investigating a missing person, according to the OPP.

Plane crash mystery: Michigan student vanishes without a trace
Posted 1:37 PM, March 21, 2017, by Bob Brenzing, Updated at 01:38PM, March 21, 2017

(Fox News) – A University of Michigan graduate student disappeared after a mysterious plane crash in Canada last week — with no sign of a body or footprints at the scene, according to local reports.

The plane, found on autopilot and out of gas, was discovered in northern Ontario, about 400 miles from Harbor Springs, Michigan, the flight’s planned destination.

Nothing surrounding the wreckage suggested anyone was near the plane at the time of the crash, Thunder Bay News reported, adding that there weren’t even any tracks in the snow.

(. . .)

According to this article, the flight plan showed the student intended to land at Harbor Springs, MI. Seems kind of unusual for a student to rent a plane at that late evening hour to fly across the state, especially in the middle of the week.

Harbor Springs, MI is about halfway between Ann Arbor and the crash site near Marathon, ON.

Surely someone saw him that evening. Did he have a parachute? Could he have jumped, then let the plane crash, hoping to disappear? Was he suicidal? A lot of questions. Hope they find him, though it's possible he could have exited the plane over either Lake Michigan or Lake Superior.

Unrelated, but coincidentally, 2 young Chinese students crashed cessnas on/near a mall in Quebec very recently, fwiw.

'The conditions were perfect'; Flight school at a loss for cause of mid-air plane collision

Mar 18, 2017

MONTREAL — Cargair, the school that was training two pilots who crashed mid-air over a South Shore mall Friday, does not think mechanical problems, the weather or language barriers were factors in the accident.

The students — both from China — were studying to be airline pilots. One of them died, the other was seriously injured. There were no passengers on the planes, both of which had taken off from the nearby St-Hubert Airport.

[h=1]What happened to the pilot of Cessna 172? Mystery surrounds the fate of student missing from crash site after police say he wasn't in the plane at the time of impact[/h]
  • Pilot, believed to be a graduate student at the University of Michigan, rented single-engine aircraft at the Ann Arbor Airport on Wednesday
  • Flight plan listed Harbor Springs, Michigan, as its destination, but the plane crashed 285 miles away outside Manitouwadge, Canada
  • Cockpit was empty and there were no footprints in snow around the wreckage
  • The plane does not have a roof hatch and was not designed to carry parachutes

Wow...this is an odd one. He obviously must have jumped out of the plane, either with or without a parachute. I wonder why he felt the need to either commit suicide in such a spectacular fashion or disappear if he did parachute and land safely. And I also wonder where he jumped, over land, over water and in which country?

:waitasec:

MOO

Is it odd that a plane can fly off course, over a national border, for so long without being detected?

Very strange case, I was planning on starting a thread, but here it is, thanks north west! It seems like the pilot must have jumped out, I'm wondering if there is some kind of political asylum angle to this. Are there other reasons no name has been released, next of kin, identity unknown?

Perhaps someone should have told him to just walk over the border then? Might have been easier ;)

[h=1]Mystery of pilotless plane remains unsolved as single engine Cessna crashes onto shore of Lake Superior[/h]
Travelling a total 407 nautical miles—or 770 km—the four-seater Skyhawk was presumably placed on autopilot and crashed after it had run out of fuel, just shy of its total range of 440 nautical miles and 60 km north of its intended destination.

“We believe it was on auto pilot (during the flight) but we can’t prove it,” Rowntree said. The 33-year-old aircraft was not equipped with a roof hatch, nor did it possess flight-recording equipment.

Normally when you go to a crash site, there is someone there

According to Rowntree, the only way in and out of the aircraft is through the two main cabin doors.

“Certainly, it’s unusual,” Rowntree said. “Normally when you go to a crash site, there is someone there.”

That reminds me of a classic joke: "If a plane crashed on the Canada-US border, where are the survivors buried?"

I suspect a suicide, jumped out over one of the great lakes. In some way copying the Malaysian missing plane mystery.

Renting a plane ... in order to jump out ... to commit suicide.

Rod Serling, is that you? Sometimes I think Websleuths should be called the Twilight Zone. Because crazy.

A woman travelled from Japan to Northern Canada last year to commit suicide by walking into the wilderness. People go to the Grand Canyon with the express purpose of jumping off the rim. Some people seem to want to go in a dramatic and mysterious way.
