Steven disappeared from his home on Merseyside in autumn 1992. I'd not heard of the case before this but the police are carrying out a new search in his believed murder.

Police search land by M53 in bid to solve 1992 Steven Preston murder

A “painstaking” search is under way after claims that a man who disappeared more than 20 years ago may have been murdered and buried on land near a motorway junction.

Specialist officers from Merseyside Police are focusing on an area near junction 5 of the M53 in the Eastham, Wirral, after new information was received about Steven Preston.

The 23-year-old, from Heath Road, Bebington, was reported missing in September 1992 after he was last seen by his late mother when he waved to her from his bedroom window as she left for work.

One of the fields police are searching lies empty now but, at the time, featured stables and a paddock.
Police were clearing overgrown patches this morning and boring holes into the ground in the hope of releasing a scent that sniffer dogs could follow.
Around 90,000 holes will be dug by police during the search for Steven, with police likely to be on site for a week.

Hopefully the tip is real, police are certainly taking it seriously. But even so it can be easy to miss buried remains.

I was a neighbour of Steven when he disappeared, I didnt recongise his name when it appeared in the news this week as we knew him as Ghandi -we would see him about often with his brother. My strongest memory of them is of them walking past our house arms around each other happily singing 'more than words' by Extreme which was a big hit around that time.

When he vanished I don't remember anything about him on the news or missing posters ,I think I was told by a close school friend whose family were a lot more sociable locally than mine sometime later that he was missing.

I do remember he used to regularly hang around the local shops on the Brackenwood Estate at the top of Heath Road, Bebington
I dont know much about Steven or if he was involved with hard drugs but several of his friends he hung around with certainly were herion users -or at least thats what we knew them as at the time. As children around 10 years younger we were strongly warned not to hang around near them by our parents. My friend said the rumours were he had been killed by drug dealers he owed money to but that was I imagine purely speculation. I remember thinking as a child he might of gone to London or somewhere and would come back eventually. I had no idea he was still missing all these years later.

I do hope his sister, family & friends find out where he is and what happened to him after all this time and hopefully some kind of justice too if he was murdered.

Steven Preston lived with his mum in Heath Road, Bebington when he was reported missing on September 23, 1992.

New information received by Merseyside Police claimed that Steven may have been killed and buried on land in Eastham.

In a previously released statement superintendent Ian Hassall said: "Steven was last seen by his mum, Isobel, he waved from his bedroom window to her when she left for work at 8.45am.

"Isobel said there had been no arguments and Steven had left home without his jacket or prescription for medication he was on.

Superintendent Hassall added: "Sadly Steven's mother Isobel and half-brother Michael Connolly have died since his disappearance, never knowing what had happened to him.

"I would appeal to anyone who has any information about Steven's disappearance to contact us. Information they have could be vital.

Steven’s sister Jane said: "My little brother went missing over 20 years ago. He lived in Bebington all his life. Bebington was a much smaller place than it is now and everybody knew everyone.

"Steve went to Brackenwood infants and junior school and then to New Chester Road secondary (Chegga Road), he might be better known by his nickname 'Ghandi'. He was a gentle, kind and funny lad. He didn't have a nasty bone in him. He was my friend. He adored my mum and it destroyed her when he disappeared. She knew instantly that he wouldn't off just left and never contact her again and that something awful must have happened to him.

"After all this time has passed if anyone knows anything or heard anything at the time, no matter how insignificant if they could come forward it could help us find some answers."
