In 2010, Moscow’s subway was targeted by suicide bombers that killed 40 people in coordinated attacks. The last major attacks took place in December 2013, just weeks before the start of the Sochi Winter Olympics,

Islamic State has repeatedly threatened to stage attacks in Russia in revenge for the Russian bombing in Syria t

Russian official called the blast terror attack, and a source tells the Russian news agency RIA that the explosive device used was "homemade and small capacity."

Was hoping it would be a mistake but it seems like there were two bombs, after all. :( And now some sources are reporting that there was a third, unexploded bomb found as well.

The agency that runs the subway said several stations in the northern Russian city were closed and that an evacuation was underway.

Social media users posted photographs and video from a subway station in the city centre, showing people lying on the floor outside a train with a mangled door. Frantic commuters reached into doors and windows, trying to see if anyone was there and shouting "Call an ambulance!" The explosion happened between Sennaya Ploshchad and Tekhnologichesky Institut stations.
Putin was expected to hold talks with the Belarusian president later in the day.

Sadly, the explosion(s) were probably magnified by the confined space deep under ground of the subway. This causes an explosion to blow up, then blow down again as the force is unable to dissipate into the air.

Those poor people ! :(
Just trying to go about their day.....

This thread should maybe be moved to "Terrorist and Rampage Attacks" ??

RIP to the deceased ; and swift justice to the perpetrator(s) !!!!!!

CARIIS this makes me think of what you so often say - what we call terrorism they call war, and what we call war they call terrorism.

I'm not suggesting ISIS are not terrorists, not that at all.

CNN is stating the Russian Prosecutor is calling this attack an "act of terror". Russia is the main target for jihadi terrorist attacks not the United States.

Hi CARIIS sorry we meet again after yet another tragedy.

Ten people died — seven in the subway system, one while en route to a hospital and two while they were being admitted to an emergency room — and 39 others were injured, the health minister, Veronika Skvortsova, announced live on television. Some of the wounded included children, she said.

Another bomb was found at a nearby station, Vosstaniya Square, but was disarmed, a spokesman for the National Anti-Terrorism Committee, Andrei Przhezdomskiy, said on television. The city announced that all surface transportation would be free until further notice, and officials urged residents to remain vigilant.

“I appeal to you, citizens of St. Petersburg and guests of our city, to be alert, attentive and cautious, and to behave in a responsible manner in light of events,” Georgi S. Poltavchenko, the governor of St. Petersburg, said in a statement. As the old imperial capital, the city has the status of a federal governorate.

The governor declared a three-day period of mourning, starting on Tuesday.

Coward. Dropping a bomb and scurrying off like a filthy rat. The lack of humanity in attacks like this never ceases to shake me. Monsters live and breath the same are we do. They look like just another commuter on the train, blending in just to cause pain. The worst type of human are those without an ounce of empathy and on a crusade of pain. May god bless those killed and injured. This is so senseless.

Hi Greg

Its endless aint it ..............

I don't know why but I was surprised when I saw terror attack in Russia.

I have no idea where it appeared as if I had some illusion that it does not happen over there?

Awful news from a beautiful city. The underground stations there (and Moscow) are absolutely stunning, it's like walking into an old art gallery.

Is this ever gonna end?

I was shocked at these statistics "But incidents like Monday's bombing in St. Petersburg remain a problem for Russia, where more than*3,500 people are estimated to have died in over 800 attacks since 1970. Here's a WorldViews list of*some of the deadliest attacks."

It is going to be interesting to see who is behind this Chechen terrorists, ISIS followers or home grown terrorists. I'm waiting to hear back from my friend who lives in St Petersburg that she and her family are ok. I'm worried I haven't heard from her.
