Police and State Emergency Service volunteers are scouring the running route usually taken by Rhys Sutton, 26, around the suburban streets of Emu Plains and Leonay, near Penrith.
A NSW Police spokeswoman said Mr Sutton left his home on Jacob King Place in Emu Plains about 4.15am on Thursday.
The experienced runner usually returned home no later than 5.30am, before going to work later in the morning.

On Thursday, he did not return home from his run, and has not attended his workplace.
The police helicopter was circling Emu Plains on Thursday morning, while officers on dirt bikes and in a boat were also searching for him.
Police said he had good geographical knowledge of Emu Plains and Leonay.
